Download speed suddenly slow

Hi, 

So I got back on my PC today after a few days away from it, and came back to find that my download speed has been significantly reduced. I thought it was the last windows update I got before I turned off my PC for the last time I was on it, so I uninstalled it but that didn't seem to fix it. It also only is on my PC that this is happening as every other device on the network is fine getting the maximum speed they can, but now I am downloading at less than a Meg' a second. I have been on to windows support and my ISP, but so far no solutions. Any help appreciated.

I am measuring the speeds by Ookla and the one provided by steam when downloading a game. Usually in steam (as I check that often enough, I can give good comparison) I get about 10~MB/s while downloading a game, but now it struggles to get over 600KB/s

Basic troubleshooting steps: Check for downloading devices on the network eventually sucking up bandwidth and give the router a reboot.

I've done this already, and at the moment, nobody else is using devices, the bandwith is free.

Check that on your router, you're never sure enough. Sometimes download speeds are capped by decompression on steam though, so it's not an extremely reliable source to base yourself on. Pick up an ookla test right next to your router, and if you get about 80 mbps (10MBps x 8) then it's just that specific game download might need your computer to decompress as it downloads.

Well, checking the test on Ookla on my phone shows the speeds I expect, but doing the same test on my desktop shows that I get a ping near or at 200ms, and a DL speed of 1 Meg' and under.

Also I have downloaded this game before at the high speeds I'm used to, I'm just reinstalling it today, and the speed is not near as good as it should be.

So your phone runs at expected full speed? Then I say you give your PC a good old reboot or monitor it's network usage on task manager to see if it's not the fault of a download running in the background like windows update.

I've rebooted  the PC countless times at this stage, and it's not something taking up the download speed and nothing appears in the task manager's network usage, and also that I doubt it would be still downloading *something* for the last few hours that i've been trying to fix this issue.

use this test instead

its a html5 speed test (unlike ookla )  https://speedof.me

 

this shows the download speed of your browser , 

do that test a couple times and compare to your mobile phone or other pc

 

but basicly you already said that your phone runs normal ... so it is your pc

 

now the other things to fix your speed

 

first open task manager and see what is using the traffic ( source control can give some info , if you click on the button in task manager )

there you can see if something is using your internet

 

second to check , specialy if it is windows ... is windows update

it use your internet connection even when you do not want it

 

then if those are not the problem then we continue

Windows got Windows Defender ... a nice program that use your pc resources ... opening files takes longer because of scanning

and even downloads get scanned ... disable it and test speed again .. fixed ?? then i can provide a file to keep it disabled as it auto enable after a certain time ( a hour or so  ) 

 

if not , then lets continue to figure this out

open CMD as Admin

then type the following

pathping google.com

let it run for some time , and then see at the delays ( see screenshot, please note i am uploading a video at this moment  and using a hotspot ...  ) 

 

also run a malware scan ( malwarebyte ) and a virus scan

 

You could also reset your network ( Disable/enable ) in windows or change the DNS servers to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

 

and to make sure it is windows or something on windows that cause this you could test the following

take a usb stick , install E2B ( easy2boot) on it and a linux live CD (ubuntu or so ) 

start it up , test your speed on there , and if it is still slow ... then it could be hardware related ( this could already the case in windows if you changed the nic settings to other value's ? ) 

if it is fast , use then the opportunity to do a virus scan on your windows drive so all files can be scanned and no programs are open ( even the hidden one)

Thanks for the reply, but somehow, it seems to have fixed itself when I just turned off the PC and left in for an hour or two...
