i7 7700k vs i7 8700k

If you don't want to buy a new motherboard, see if you can find a used 7700k in your local online classifieds. If you can't find that, even a 2nd hand 7700 or 7600k will still be a big step up from the dual core i3 6100 you have now.

What is your budget, why are you even considering 7700k?

 

EDIT:

Because you have changed your post, so can i. If you already have the z270 board and you are only gaming then the 7700k would be a decent option.

Depends on what you're doing with the PC and what CPU you have right now.

8700k will deliver top gaming performance for 5 years at least, while 7700k wont take long to become a mid range CPU. I'd definitely recommend spending money on a Z370 mobo.

Might as well wait for the 9th gen... but an i7 7700K is still enough for high end gaming.

No, the i5 7600K would never make sense, if he's spending money get the i7 already, nobody should invest money on 4c/4t CPUs with today's offerings.
