So I recently picked up an old laptop for super cheap. It's a dell XPS M1710 with Windows XP.

I just did a fresh install on a 1tb hdd, and I'm trying to get it to connect to the internet so I can get it updated fully. I still have to do a bios update, and get it to service pack 3, which I can copy the files over via flash drive. but I want to be able to have it check the drivers to see if they are up to date (I doubt they are, as they are all installed from the included disc).

Other than updating it, I do plan to put some kind of antivirus software on it, as there are a couple games I have that still have an active online community, and would like to be able to play on those.

however, I cant get it to connect to the internet. as I said, I still have a little bit of updating to do, but as of right now, I am able to connect to my router, via both lan and wifi, with no success. I tried to just load up Google with internet explorer, and I get page unavailable. I did what it suggested to do, and it didnt fix it.

Is it just too old, and needs the be fully updated first? I'm not sure exactly what version IE is right off hand.

what suggestions are there to get it working?

Most likely the issue is that there are no drivers included in Windows to handle your NIC. You'll need to download the appropriate driver from here https://www.dell.com/support/home/ca/en/cadhs1/product-support/product/xps-m1710/drivers on another machine and essentially use a USB drive to transfer the installation file over.

Those are installed and included on the disc, both for the ethernet port and wireless card.

Broadcom 57XX Gigabit Integrated Controller and NetXtreme 5721C1 NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet PCI-E driver

Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection, (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN, v.11.5.0.0 (TIC148234), A13

are both installed.

it shows I am connected to the network when hooked up, just when using internet explorer, it doesn't work at all. I get that the page cannot be displayed, to check the internet options and enable LAN settings to auto detect, also to check and enable security sections, and enable SSL 2.0 SSL 2.0, TLS 1.0 and PCT 1.0

It says at the very bottom Cannot find Server of DNS Error

It is internet explorer 6.0

EDIT: The update to service pack 3 has fixed whatever the issue was. now to get an antivirus software and start updating it

Edit Edit: So I can visit some websites, and not others. I've been able to get an antivirus installed. and also start updates.

when I am not able.to load a website. it tells me to run a diagnostic tool. that tells me my PC cannot connect using http https or ftp. and that I need to check http port 80, https port 443 and ftp port 21. says it could be ISP or firewall.

I did add these to my router and it still doesn't work
