8800GTS deactivates GTX1080 when installed or how to run two different NVidia GPUs at the same time?!

Recently I got the chance to get my hands on a free Nvidia 8800 GTS 512MB. So, of course, I took it and am currently trying to see if it actually still works - which luckily it does.

The problem is, that if I install the 8800 GTS alongside the GTX 1080, it deactivates the GTX 1080 with the error code 43 in device manager.

It's not that I actually want to use the card, its way to old, but would be interesting to know what the issue is.

So, got any ideas? :)

If you can solve it, you can use the 8800 GTS as a dedicated PhysX card.

Waste of electricity, though :P

No, that doesn't seem to be the issue. Windows tells me that both drivers are installed and function properly.

I rather wanted to use it to drive my second display, to take some of the load of my 6700K, which is currently driving it.

why don't you use your 1080 to drive your secondary monitor?

I may be wrong.

I don't want to put the 1080 under more load than necessary.

I've tried it before, didn't work out as I wanted to.

Don’t see why you are bothering to even put it in.

Id put the 1080 in the top slot, install nvidia drivers. Then install the 8800 and let it install the basic driver and that’s it. Then do what ever with it. If you get an error code reinstall the nvidia driver.

And exactly that doesn't work.

What you call "the basic driver", is the NVidia 346.xx driver - the latest driver for the 8800GTS, which Windows automatically installs.
As soon as it's installed, it deactivates the 398.xx driver for my 1080 and therefore deactivates the card.

Reinstalling the driver doesn't help. The older driver always gets automatically deactivated.

Why I would bother with it? Cause it's fun. ;)

You can't.

I think you just can't use them both at same time in one PC.

Basic drivers are just that, not nvidia drivers. Need to disable auto install of the driver. So turn of the internet.

Installing an older driver wont make a card not work, it still has basic drivers to display like any card would.

If I don't install a driver, then the fans will constantly run on 100% and the performance would go down to hell.

Installing an older driver will make one of the cards not work. In this case the 1080.

Isn’t much performance to be had out of that card anyway.

Install windows xp and call it a day.
