I picked up a Dell XPS M1710 laptop witn windows XP to do some old school gaming (FEAR, Zoo tycoon, C&C First decade, Star Craft, Spore, Neverwinter Nights, a few others to start with)

The stock 100gb hdd seems a little small for me, as I do plan to ebay some more older games. I'd also like to not have to worry about disks, as it is a laptop, i don't want to have to lug around my disc collection as well.

I was thinking this Team Group L5 LITE 2.5" 480GB SSD would be a good size for what I want, and SSD for the extra speed and quietness (the hdd now is loud when it kicks in). And a fresh install on a brand new drive never hurts, right? (I do have all the original discs with it too)

I just want to make sure that the SSD there would work with the M1710, and also be good enough for a spare old school gaming laptop.

It supports SATA I or SATA II speeds, don't buy a modern SSD for it- you will barely see any benefit.

I figured an ssd would be overkill for speed, but just plain durable in it, and silent. I wouldn't have to hear a drive spin up. plus that team drive isnt too bad of a price and the size I'm looking for. I plan on keeping XP on it,  going to use the dell CDs that I have that came with it to reinstall fresh on a new drive.

I suppose if I went with a regular disk drive, would like a WD velociraptor be fine?

No. It's a thicker format and the 10000rpm speed will destroy your ears. I'd just recommend getting a cheap 1tb WD blue.

such as this one?

what about one of those hybrid drives Seagate makes?  I'd pay the extra for the WD SSHD

I said, the first blue you suggested is fine.

wouldn't the 7200 WD Black be better for me? It's going to be a strictly gaming machine. That was the only reason for getting it, to play the older games that no longer work properly on windows 10 and I dont want to mess with trying to get working. and the black drive is only about $20 more

and that brings.me.back to the ssd as well. sure I'll be limited by the SATA speed, but it'll be as fast as can be, no sound from it, and more durable for a laptop.

As I said before, placing an SSD in that laptop would be a waste of money and I would choose a WD Blue for that laptop.
