Screen looks stretched at its native resolution

I've had this problem since I reinstalled Windows in my computer, and I don't know what might be the cause or how to solve it. When I set the resolution of my computer to its native resolution, 1440x900, everything looks stretched horizontally and pixels get kind of blurry due to this. It is particularly noticeable in photos (since you see slightly deformed faces) and in MS Paint when painting a 1 pixel line in any direction.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers with no results at all.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? I had never had this problem before, and I cannot seem to find any information about it on the internet.

I have an ASUS VE228D 1440x900 monitor and my computer has an AMD R9 270 graphics card.

Thanks!

I'm using a VGA cable since it's the only connector my monitor has. Also, back then when I bought the monitor they sold it at a 1440x900 resolution (it's a 16:10 monitor). I have used it for years at that resolution with no issue, and only encountered a problem this time.

My guess is it's some kind of software issue, but I don't know how I could try to prove that!
