Hi everyone.

This is my first time posting here. I'll follow the thread guidelines for posting here, as listed by the mod

I'm from Karachi, Pakistan and looking to buy a PC for gaming mostly. The currency we use is PKR (Pakistani rupee). A bit of a background i should mention is that buying a brand new PC or even buying parts and building a PC costs a Fortune in Pakistan, so i can't really afford a glittering new rig. I have to make do with used but in good condition PCs or maybe even refurbished PCs (some of those are direct imports from USA and so on).

My main aim is to play AAA games on the rig. I am planning to play at 1080p, 60fps and all graphics settings maxed out. For those resource-heavy games, I am willing to play at 40 fps stable, provided that the graphics settings remain maxed out.

I am planning to use a FreeSync monitor ( This one in particular ) , which has a refresh rate of 75Hz and 1080p IPS panel. If there are any reservations regarding using this monitor for gaming at 1080p with all settings maxed out, please let me know !

I already have a prospective build in mind, as follows;

i5 6600 OR i5 6500

8 GB DDR4 ram

1 TB HDD

RX580 8GB

550 W (80+ rated) PSU

I hope to maintain this system for around 2 years before making incremental upgrades or maybe even getting a new build altogether after that time. However, i have been continuously researching and i have some questions, that i hope you guys can help me out with.

1. The i5 6500 has been called a 'joke' in some places and has had stuttering issues with games like BF1 and Assasins Creed Origins. I'm worried that it will start stuttering in future games as well. Since i can't go for 7th or 8th gen (wildly out of budget), what would you suggest i do to avoid this ? what would be the best way to approach this ?

2. is the RX 580 a good GPU for my use case ? I just want the settings turned ultra / maxed out, at 1080p and enjoy a stable fps (60 hopefully). But i have read (here and here)  that even the rx580 and 1060 6GB are becoming obsolete if one wants to game on 1080p ultra settings at 60fps and are struggling to handle the latest AAA games. If anyone can guide me regarding this, it's much appreciated !

I am focusing on the longevity of the system and that's all. I can't afford to invest money every few months, that is why i am trying to get a build with some upgrade potential ( the skylake setup can support a 7th gen i7, which would be the ideal upgrade when the CPU starts bottle-necking the GPU )

But any input and guidance and recommendation you people can give and help me out of this quandary, is most appreciated. I would be grateful for any guidance and assistance i can get here.

P.S : kindly don't recommend Ryzen, as there is very limited to no availability of Ryzen in Karachi. I am all for a Ryzen build but they are very rare and more expensive here.

1. Assassin's Creed Origins will stomp the guts out of anything less than a 4 core 8 thread CPU. The 6500 and 6600 has merely 4 cores and 4 threads. At least shoot for the i5 8400. It's too bad that Ryzen CPUs are rare for you, as they would be a better match for your particular case.

2. The RX 580 can handle high settings at 1080p in most games, if not all. AC Origins is probably one of the most demanding games for it, though I still expect it to run at least 45-50 FPS on high settings at 1080p. Your Freesync monitor will help with the screen tearing and overt choppiness if the framerate drops into that range.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

What about getting an i7 6th gen?

would it help, in the longer run ?

i can try to ask the shop to fit in an i7 6700, it's might be possible.

However, would it help in resource eating games like Assasins Creed Origins and BF1 ?

and ofcourse, with the longevity of the system ?

This is what i'm fearful about ... almost have my heart in mouth

why exactly are they dead ? what happened so badly ?

Ryzen killed them in value

at launch AMD was offering 8 core CPUs with 80-90% the single threaded performance of intel's 4 core CPUs at the same price.

an R5 1400 is like $99 USD on ebay now and does well against the 4 core i7s

Is Ryzen just not available in your area?

i see. I was following them very closely as well, back when they were known as Zen CPUs in late 2016. Yeah, they are cheap but i never imagined they'd be killing i5 and i7 CPUs just like that. If i'm not mistaken, the R5 1400 is a budget CPU ? or mid-range-ish ?

The problem with AMD is, they were officially present in Pakistan about 10 years back or so, but there isn't alot of awareness here, people used to buy intel like idiots. eventually, AMD's market share dropped to unprofitable levels her and they left. I knew the worth of their Ryzen CPUs because i gamed from an early age and also because as a Computer Engineer, i also analyzed their stuff technically as well. up till 2013, i had a radeon 4650 GPU for games, because i sort of liked AMD.

Because AMD are not here officially anymore (or are yet to make a return to the Pakistani market), their hardware is sold by importing it or through grey market channels. This makes the costs skyrocket, even the Ryzen 1400 costs like the Pakistani Rupee equivalent of $200+ here. which is quite out of budget for me ... which is why i can't really go for Ryzen in Karachi, Pakistan.

Then probably just get an i7 at minimum if at all possible.

Or take a trip to india/china probably cheaper to fly there, buy ryzen 7 and fly back.

What's the cost differential of doing an i5 8400 build with an H310 board as compared to what you originally intended?

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

well... say i have roughly around $350 for the PC the shop's selling, without GPU.

so, i5 6th gen cpu, mobo, ram, hdd, psu, case all of these will cost around $350 or even more if i go for i7 6th gen.

the GPU separately will cost in upwards of $350 here (yep, Pakistan is HELL expensive for Computer Parts !)

if instead i go for 8th gen, the cost will increase to ATLEAST $500 equivalent of Pakistani Rupees. i can't be sure if that prices includes the RAM and HDD as well. it's that much expensive here...

Wow that market is pretty bad O.o

You'll be better off just going with the i7 6700 then.

i'm still going to try asking around for Ryzen build, but there's a slim chance i might find them. If i do, i'll get back to you guys to ask for help.

once again, will the i7 6700 help me in the long run ?

It'll be a lot better than the i5. Especially with CPU heavy titles like AC Origins.

In the long run, like over the next few years or so, it'll remain a pretty decent CPU for most applications except heavily CPU dependent multithreaded games, of which there'll be more of as time goes on. Rightfully so I might add.

guys, i am in contact with the shop and they have Ryzen available

the offer is

Ryzen 1500x

X370 ( the exact model is : Battle AXE C.X370M-G DELUXE V14 )

500 GB HDD

4 GB Ram ( will upgrade this once i have extra cash on hand)

is this good enough ??

can the motherboard support Ryzen 2 CPUs when i want to upgrade later on ?!

P.S : this is a limited stock system, pretty sure imported from abroad. Kindly let me know asap, my heart's beating !

the i7 setup might have cost a tad bit less but i don't really care, because since i discovered in this thread, thanks to you guys, that it's the number of threads which will take over in CPU intensive games in the coming times it's a no-brainer to invest in Ryzen.

i think we have the BIOS updates here,

https://en.colorful.cn/DownloadShow3.aspx?nodename=Battle AXE C.X370M-G DELUXE V14&parentid=69

it has something called " AM4 Raven Ridge/Pinnacle Ridge CPU BIOS 1004N " in BIOS dowloads, i figure that's the updated BIOS we need for Ryzen2 compatibility  ?

eh ... what's a VRM heatsink and what's it do ?

Just a chunk of metal over the VRM, most motherboards don't have actual heatsinks though, which is really dumb

This only one only really affects Ryzen APUs because the iGPU gets it's power from the SoC(usually top) VRM
