1070 for Adobe Premier or old Quadro

The short story is brother in law uses Adobe Premier Pro and is pretty broke as in they just get by.  He recently got exited when I salvaged a Quadro 4000 2GB card for him from a old workstation.  I do not know specs of his desktop but it's safe to say it's likely hurting if that Quadro card was a upgrade.  I know nothing about video editing, but both sister and him to a fair bit of it in Adobe Premier. I'm fortunate enough to be able to gift him a 1070 as I want to help them out.  I need to confirm the 1070 will be a big upgrade over the Quadro 4000 right?  The reason for 1070 is that is my current card and I will be upgrading (ASUS ROG Strix). I'd rather gift to him rather than sell.  He does not game at all.

a 1070 will be a much better card unless you need quadro only features(10 bit, 3d din connector, offically supported drivers(you don't need that in premiere). the quadro 4000 is about the same as a gtx 460.

 

Whats the rest of the system, there may be a better upgrade for that much money, premiere normally doesn't need that much gpu power. A 1050 + a ssd or faster cpu or more ram may be a better buy.

Haven't confirmed the specs of his current system just yet but I believe he is on a older gen i7/DDR3.  I wanted to kind of surprise him with it.  We don't live near each other so I've never seen his setup.

Id look into the other specs if you can first. Your probably not gpu limited, so something like a large ssd may help more.

I'm pretty sure he's running on a SSD and has enough RAM.  I gave him a decent PSU at some point as well a coulple years back.  Unfortunately I've got no idea specifically what he does in Premier.

It would be a big boost just because of the VRAM bump alone.

 

Modern Adobe Suite will gobble up VRAM when allowed.

 

Not only that, but it's got way more compute.

 

The 1070 is honestly my recommendation for modern video editing builds unless you really need those Quadro features, since from regular desktop GPUs, the 1080 and 1080ti really don't offer much more performance in those use cases to justify the money.

Perfect, thank you.  This is what I wanted to hear.  I just wanted to run this by someone before going ahead.  I figured as much but didn't want to be wrong and have decent hardware wasting away not being utilized.
