It feels like culture has stagnated.

I feel like culture has stagnated. And has been stagnant for at least the past 10 years. Nothing feels new anymore. There's no creativity in the media I consume. All music sounds very similar and generic. There's nothing new or innovative being done anymore. All I have to look forward to are remakes, rehashes and re-releases of already existing games, movies, songs, etc. But especially music. Nobody is making anything listenable. Mumble rap infuriates me. I live in new york and the two hip hop stations play shitty mumble rap most of the day. The main pop station Z100 is relying on more and more 'classics' to fill out the air time, but some of those songs are barely a couple of years old. And when a hot new song comes along, the radio stations saturate it so much it becomes outdated within a month. I love going out to music clubs and listening to live music, but sadly it all sucks. It's so bad. Almost all the bands have zero talent and/or are tribute bands without an ounce of creativity in them. I swear sometimes I can predict the lyrics and chords before they are even played. And on youtube stagnation and blandness are the most visible. Pretty much all the youtubers that I used to love, have either stopped making videos altogether, or have gone in a completely different and boring direction, or are making the same bland cookie cutter shit that everyone else does. *cough* fortnite *cough*

I cant be the only one that's noticed this?

First of all, music has most definitely not stagnated. The problem is that you're listening to radio stations which for the few that still play music, usually play what's popular over and over. Try listening to Spotify or Pandora, streaming music is the present and the future. Some youtubers have stopped making videos because of YouTube (owned by Google). It's 100% based on YouTube's bad algorithms that prevent certain videos from reaching audiences which means.... well you know. Interestingly enough, a channel I love watching just mentioned this and it's worth checking out to get an idea.

Define box? I seek out unique and novel experiences which are not hard to come by in nyc. I went out to a brand new music club that opened up near me and the bands were really bad. I dont think my date was enjoying herself either, but we pretended that it was the time of our lives, because we both wanted to get laid and didn't want to seem mean.

I only listen to radio when in the car. I already have pandora and the music it recommended to me is too same-ish.

Any recommendations?

Where should I look then?

Btw I dont go to punk and/or anarchist shows. Punk is dead and the conditions of the squat disgust me. Too many drug addicts and molesters.

Actually there's a reason pop music sounds very similar. Forgot the name but the pattern of most modern pop songs is the same, and it usually repeats. So there's very little development of the music.

If you can travel I'd recommend it. Not even overseas, just hop in a car and drive somewhere new.

Also try Spotify, their algorithms are pretty good

There comes a point in every young man's life where he looks at the Billboard Top 40 and says "No talent hacks".

You've reached that point.

The truth of the matter is that we in some ways live in a golden age of Western culture.

I would argue that there's never been as much quality content released as there has been over the last couple of years.

A look at TV, and serial content in general, should reveal this clearly. You have Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Power, Stranger Things, Vinyl, Rick & Morty, Atlanta and Mad Men just to name a few.

You might not like any of them, but at no other time has there been so much quality TV that has impacted the cultural zeitgeist in such a major way.

Music wise it just sounds like your formative years are behind you, old man.

Your taste in music has been cemented and eveything popular that'll come out from now on is bound to annoy and confuse you.

Whether by design or by coincidence. It happened to your grandparents, your parents and now it's happening to you.

The truth is that we live in a world of 100% democratized music. Everyone can create the music they like for an audience that likes the same thing.

There will always be something out there for everybody. At no time before have so much quality music had the oppertunity to reach a wide audience.

As for your point about mumble rap, I think your thinking about it wrong. Mumble rap was never meant to be lyrical, it's rather meant to fuse the vocals and the production. It's essentially no different than how death growls are used in extreme metal genres.

While I can't force you to like it, or even appreciate it, I do think it should be given credit for what it is.

In regards to movies there has been huge moves within the last 10 years.

Superhero movies have become a mainstream fixture and is no longer a thing aimed directly at an audience of comic book nerds.

We've also seen the rise and fall of the YA movie genre within the same span, so things are certainly not stagnated within the movie industry.

When it comes to YouTube you've more than likely run into the curse of the 5 year cycle.

A format can only live for so long before it becomes formulaic, the audience leaved for greener pastures and then the format dies out.

Just look at the development of the let's play format. It pretty much started as montages, then became play-by-play guides, just to gradually become more and more personality focused untill they basically became vlogs with gameplay in the background.

There's pretty much nothing sadder than seeing someone that got big in the beginning of YouTube and is now clinging on to relavance for dear life.

Like, check if your favorite CoD YouTuber from 2011 have a Twitch channel and be prepared for the existential dread.

Are you talking about the I–V–vi–IV progression? If so, yes, it has been used endlessly in pop music, but has seemingly seen a recession in later years.

There seems to have been a shift towards a IV-V-vi-V progression, which is certainly as functional, although, a bit less upbeat.

I blame the Chainsmokers for popularizing this.

That's an awful video.

His main thesis rely on one study, which is purely based on measuring music on subjective measurments of "good", and then judging songs based on those measurments.

Claiming that loudness (which is essentially just an effect) creates a less diverse soundscape is pure bullocks. Both Black Fast and Merzbow are mastered with loundness in mind, but the two couldn't sound any different.

The "Millennial Whoop" as you say is not really a sign of musical degradation, but rather that certain times have certain flavours in their music.

If you go back to the 60's you'll hear an awful lot of vocal harmonization that sounds alike and if you go back to the 80's there are a lot of Casio PT-80 rythmes.

Just addressing the lyrics of a piece of music is like only judging the tires of a car. Sure, it's important but it hardly gives you a full picture.

A song is much and more than just it's lyrics. There's also musical structure, melody and the what is said by those "dumb" lyrics.

Persoanlly, I would rather listen to Bad and Boujee than Venus. At least the melody and structure of the Migos song is intersting and the lyrics, however dumb they are compared to the latter, are actually trying to convey something important.

While this video doesn't directly address Thoughty2, it does attack a lot of the same points:

Try to view it from this point... Culture has had a lot of time developing, many things have been done, so for something new to arise, it is quite hard, only because there isn't so much new that currently can be called new, and not warmed up.

Same with IT ... the internet and smartphones were the last big inventions... right now its just more bling, more faster, more more...

Main System:

Anghammarad : Asrock Taichi x570, AMD Ryzen 7 5800X @4900 MHz. 32 GB DDR4 3600, some NVME SSDs, Gainward Phoenix RTX 3070TI

On the Road: Acer Aspire 5 Model A515-51G-54FD, Intel Core i5 7200U, 8 GB DDR4 Ram, 120 GB SSD, 1 TB SSD, Intel CPU GFX and Nvidia MX 150, Full HD IPS display

Its mostly the media, especially in the US giving people publicity that they shouldn't have. Definitely agreed with the mumble rap - no talent. Shouldn't even be a genre. Who am I kidding, I'm a bit envious that they can get away with all that rubbish and still sell and make so much money.

You have over 1000 years worth of culture stashed around you. Seriously, stop looking at what's popular and look up things outside your radar.

Read "Candice" by Voltaire (1759).

Watch "Stalker" by Andrei Tarkovski (1979) - The movie of the book that inspired the games of the same name.

There are around 200 countries in the world and they've all been making music for a long time. Look up bands like Kino (USSR), Yellow Magic Orchestra (Japan) and Miossec (France).

Live outside of what's served to you. There's a whole world out there making mind blowing stuff.

Yeah, same as in the Roman Empire at the end of its life.

Seems like this always happens when life becomes too easy for the majority of the population and there is nothing left do do, nothing to fear, nothing to fight for.

Seems like humans need hardships to overcome to develop further...

And as for Music:

Its too corporate for the Mainstream, its not like the people make the music themselves, they are often replacable faces and the people behind them are the creative ones.

As for Films:
Well, there is this political shit that hinders them to make good movies because they care too much about unimportant shit that doesn't make the movie good or even hinders the movie to be awesome.

The last Star Wars numbered Movie is the best example of that.

The writers/producers didn't seem to have any idea of what Star Wars stands for and kinda copied itself, wrote the caracters contary to what they were the last time we've seen them.

Mark Hamil said that he had to think about someone else, that he didn't play Luke Skywalker. Well, can't be any clearer than that...

To be fair, the majority of "popular" stuff has always sucked IMO. Whether it be the 80's, 90's or whatever. Most of the time I have to dig deep to find ANYTHING I like. As a rock/metal guy, it's especially hard to find anything worthwhile. But that's me.

*cough* fortnite *cough*

most watched movies are superheros, it's so bad the oscars are going to do some crap popular vote oscar.

Games are more and morel about multiplayer and not so much story driven, Fallout 76 doesn't even have NPC's, Rockstar has been milking GTA V for a half a decade.

No one reads books anymore.

In music there are no more great artists, just hyped celebrities.

There are exceptions, still they are exceptions and the tendency is for them to be more and more exceptions.
