I am doing gaming, lighter video editing, learning to code, and school work. For my monitor, I just have an HP 22cwa which only goes up to 1080p 60fps with low possibly upgrading in the future so a lighter graphics card doesn't bother me. The cheaper I can make it the better.

If you want a cheap option, even 2tbs are priced so close to it u can pick them up in a good deal

Drop the HDD if you've got one already that you can use. Swapped the SSD for something of better quality for a bit less money and slightly higher capacity, also did the same with the PSU.

I have a 4tb 5400rpm external drive I have in my Xbox one that I don't mind removing if it will help. Would it be too slow?

Yah but that one is a sata m.2 I would go with an $80 sata or the cheap nvme drive I chose

The original drive you picked out is a SATA M.2 as well.

Unless you're doing high intensity workloads the difference between an NVMe and SATA M.2 drive is minimal at best.

Is there a good SATA SSD you would suggest? The m.2 was only because I thought it would be faster.

Either buy a cheap Windows Key at SCDKey.com or steal it.  Use that money to get a nice capacity 860 EVO at 500GB or 2-4TB storage HDD.

 

If you're going to stay at 1080p 60 for a while, stay with the 580 and save the money.

500gb ssd and 1tb in the age of streaming and cloud storage is enough for most of the people

Just saw he has the external drive, and even at 5400rpm should be fine for Plex or anything else.  I personally like having my Steam library and games on an SSD tho, so 500GB SSD is mandatory, it's the best bang/buck I've had in years.

 

For the other builds, just note he said he wants cheaper is better.  So save the lad some money, don't have to push out the $1000 budget all the way.

it'll work just fine. the samsung SSD isn't required, you can get any brand if you want. an MX500/SX6000 are cheaper choices that perform similar.

If you are not obssesed with keeping all your games installed then 240gb and 1tb hdd is enough, I have 120gb for my C drive - system and apps, 120gb ssd for games - pubg and cs go, and 1tb for photos, heavy games - fall out 4, gta v in future

Yeah, this. I just typed 860 EVO and meant to add "or similar".   Even the cheapest 500GB SSD is a huge improvement over a platter drive.

Yah a year ago I upgraded my parent's computer from a hard drive that seemed to have problems to a Samsung 860 Evo 500gb and it saw massive improvement.

 

I think I would rather just get the 500gb SSD now and if I need more storage I will either get a hard drive or use the external one.

So I looked a bit more at this and have some questions: 

 

For the motherboard: For that board wouldn't I have to update the BIOS? I would rather pay the extra.

 

For the case: Do you think the $20 dollars off is a valuable tradeoff from looks?

 

For the graphics card: Is a 1070 really worth it if all I am doing is 1080p gaming?

 

For the Power supply: Would it be too low?

 

Also is it worth it getting Windows from a 3rd party seller for cheaper?

 

Just saying I am not against these changes (except for the SSD which I want 500gb) because they make it cheaper for more performance just I have some worries.

Case - totally subjective, get any case you like to look at for a price you deem acceptable

 

Graphics - 1070 is too much for 1080p/60, get a RX580 or 1060 6GB card

 

PSU - 450W is plenty for that build

 

Windows - I've gotten 2 Windows Pro keys from SCDkey.com for less than $15 each, no issue.

newer boards will have the BIOS already updated from the factory, if not you can always just order a bootkit from AMD, it doesn't take very long.

i'd rather spend the money on a better GPU, but up to you.

not for 1080p 60hz, but if you plan on upgrading the monitor soon then it'll be worth it.

450w is more than enough for anything except a vega 64.

Thank you guys (Or gals I dunno)  so much for all the help. One last question, I may need Wifi but I am not sure yet. Should I go with a higher end motherboard with Wifi and Bluetooth or just a wifi card (cheaper)
