First time builder and first time poster. Being a mac user for the past 12 years my knowledge is limited in the PC world. I am grabbing parts for my first PC build. This build will be mainly a gaming as well as Photoshop and Illustrator build. Out of the current CPU's what would be the best choice to have a beast setup? Also I would prefer a platform that could be easily upgradable down the road.  Or is there a upcoming platform I should wait for? Any help would be appreciated.

What editing software do you use?

What is your budget?

Do you plan on doing any gaming?

My budget for the CPU is 500-600

I do a lot of gaming and I use the whole Adobe suite a lot as well.

My overall PC budget is 3000-3250

amd or intel

but I do think the 8700k beats any ryzen in most photoshop things you would want to look at benchmarks

Your choice is either the 8700k or wait 2-4 months for 9900k. Or AMD Threadripper hedt.

AMD has the best upgradability

So it seems like the 8700k would be the best for a lot of gaming and photoshop.  I appreciate all the help! Thank you all again!

You could trade game performance for better photoshop and upgradability by buying a threadripper 1950x/1920x

As far as ive looked, it looks okay. Tbh the 8700k is the most balanced choice.

think for photoshop 7700k beat it out

but newer tr might have closed or surpassed many but we wont know for awhile

The only real edge TR and AM4 has is other heavily threaded and upgradability.

A upgradable plattform would be a Ryzen CPU. 2700x is what you would be looking at

^^^ I have the 2700X and it's amazing, has smashed everything I've thrown at it so far (it's nice to keep 60fps in a large PvE area in Destiny 2 at like 13% CPU usage...). I'm just running it stock with the stock RGB cooler, and the temps are pretty low as well. I think the highest I've seen was 70C.

Even though AMD has better upgradability paths ahead, it sucks so hard on Photoshop and, for instance, any Adobe CC product. I'd suggest you to go with the 7820X or its successor, that'll be out at the end of the month. The higher RAM bandwidth and more RAM slots will help you with Photoshop and future upgrades, since your job requires memory-hungry programs.

I don't suggest you to buy anything right now, since we're less than a month far from the new HEDT series of CPUs and 2 months away from the 9th gen Intel Core i* CPUs, but more importantly, since you're focusing on both gaming and Adobe software, don't go AMD.

I did the same thing, went from a 5960X to a 1950X last year, and I sold Threadripper in less than 6 months, because it was sooooo bad with Adobe.
