Is Your Gaming Rig Being Bottlenecked??

Linus this is in reply to your most recent video, about the new iPhones:

Your so dumb linus. Stop looking at factors as small as "Apples September Keynote" for your drop in views. If your dropping views accross all of your channel during September, then maybe you should look at over 50% of your viewer demographic, students. And of courses United States students, I don't know about in Canada, but in the United States every kid who lives here will start school in the beginning of September and by the time there about a week in, homework hits hard and so does everything else. All this other stuff means no time for your videos or YouTube at all. Also you should really think harder about who's watching your videos and who's watching Apple's updates and shiz. Linus almost all of your videos are about non-apple things, so any returning viewers would care less about you not showing iPhone coverage, because they aren't watching you for apple shiz in the first place. Also since most of your video traffic is probably coming from the recommended area after a video you are loosing views there too. If all your videos are about AMD and Intel, then YouTube's AI isn't going to suggest your videos after a Apple one, so if people are in fact not watching your videos during this time. Then there's nothing you can do, because YouTube's AI has already marketed your content towards people other than Apple fans. What you need to do instead Linus, is focus on your biggest loss, school. Find a way to combat that by making videos that apply to our lives or interest us like cool tech under $5, and back to school tech that doesn't suck or maybe a series labeled "real deals" where you look at deals that are actually good on tech, Linus stop overanaylizing your stats and look at the big picture.

OK I know my system is a lot older than most of builds you all see here but I am a student and I bought the laptop from an ex-class mate, €50 which I think was well worth it. I don't have cash to upgrade right now as I am doing my masters in software design and tbh the system as it stands does the work I need it for and when it comes to more intensive workload I have access to the game development pc's in college.

Right now to my question I am an avid World of Tanks player (I suck but love the game) I am wondering if there is any second hand options to help me get more fps and maybe a little better quality in my game experience that WON'T set me back more then €75 as that is what I have hidden away from my wife.

Kind regards

take a look at page 90-92 in this manual

https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_z380_z480_z485_z580_z585_hmm_1st_edition_feb_2012_english.pdf

it contains a list of compatible CPUs in your laptop. you can probably order on of these CPUs of ebay and upgrade, though i wouldnt pick up more than a dualcore.

this might improve performance slightly, but i wouldnt really recommend doing something like this unless you really want to

your laptop uses the socket G2 which allows certain CPUs to be used. i know this because ive been looking at a CPU upgrade in my laptop for a while.

You’re doing a lot better than me... I know that PubG dips significantly at times for a multitude of reasons.

My system:

A10-7850k OC’d to 4.2

Cooler Master GeminII S524 Ver.2

Msi A88XM Gaming mobo

2 x 8 HyperX Fury DDR3 1600mhz ram

Corsair RM 550x psu

Msi RX 580 Armor mk2 8gb overclock edition

Samsung 850 evo 500gb SSD

Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 750gb HD

My cpu is no doubt my bottleneck. It’s a fairly reliable setup but I think it’s time for some upgrades.

So here my PC:

CPU : I3-4160

RAM: 2x4GB DDR3 1600

VGA: GTX 650Ti

Monitor: asus FHD 60hz

PSU: ARROW AHA 650W

I just play some LoL and World of tank with low setting for 3 years without any issue. Now i know that my GPU too weak for my CPU by 70-80% (http://thebottlenecker.com/)

And I want to upgrade my VGA to AMD RX 580 8GB (2nd) first, so any advice for my monitor and setting. Should i buy a QHD monitor to push my VGA workload or just use my current monitor and save money to upgraded CPU soon.

tip: never use websites to calculate bottlenecks, because there will allways be one, it depends on resolution, games and more.

a 1080p IPS display is enough, you dont need to spend extra on a 1440p one.

a new GPU would be the next item to upgrade, yes.

unless you are missing an SSD to have your OS on. in which case get an SSD

I'll mention GPU's for these in a bit..

i7 2600 + OC
i7 3770 or greater.

Z-Chipsets would be best,..As fast as you can get Ram 2133-2400Mhz,. the better,... not being limited to 1600Mhz on B/H motherboard chipsets,..
16GB RAM is widely advisable...for Gaming smoothness,.and DDR3 is cheaper than DDR4.

Ryzen with decent clocks at 8threads or Intel 6c6t would also work better or similar (game dependent)

Older (2nd/3rd Gen) Quadcore CPU's with 8threads are now Entry level (but offering MUCH better frametimes than 4c4t CPU's) going forward, but you can easily GPU bound MANY GPU's still at 1080p Ultra,..RX570/580/GTX980/1060, could do more with more, but being reasonable...

In respect of Value, you are aiming for more than 2 years,.. so that's why I never mentioned lower performing parts.

(280x OC or 380x / 1050Ti / GTX680 4GB / 3GB GTX780 and such GPU's below this)

Games can scale with Medium-High preset pretty well +High/Ultra Textures still for super smooth FPS, and High settings or Better for well made non-AAA titles at 1080p.

All depends on budget overall,..and if you mind dropping smoke/shadows and some post-processing down to medium while rocking Textures as high as possible.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Hey guys, I hope I can get some answers in here.

Just saw the video, and upgraded my computer last week mainly to play BFV.

I'm using a Ryzen 3 2200g, 16gb ram ddr4 2400mhz, 1060 6gb and a basic ssd, with a 1080p 60hz monitor.

I'm getting around 50-70 fps, with massive drops on explosions, while afterburner shows around 85-90% usage on cpu 4 cores, and around 40% usage on vga.

I'm quite frustrated because of this, and planning already to upgrade processor. But going to 2700x will improve that much of my gaming experience? Because the prices are quite abusive where I am from. Also, I came across ryzen master software, where it's possible to set my processor to a "gaming" setup, which will bump my processors from 2800mhz to 3500mhz. Is it safe doing it with stock cooler? Also, I saw some conflicting experiences with this software. I use pcs for a long time, and never ever overclocked. So I don't know if I should trust the software, or should I do it via bios if its safe.

I know, lots of stuff to cover, thanks in advance!

Not really related to the content of the video but can someone please tell me the name of the background music? It's fantastic. Specifically the background in the first half of the video.

Your "THREAD" limited more than core limited. Ryzen 4Core8Threads (Haswell4Core8threads) pushed up to and over 100fps.
8Threads or 6Cores+ is what you need for AAA gaming.

As far as i can tell my processor and ram are my bottle necks, AMD Athlon X4 845 3.5ghz, 4gb ddr3 1333mhz ram, R9 290x 8gb Graphics, 3 Mechanical Hard drives (Varying in size), 850 watt Power Supply, and not a lot of cooling lol

both Ram and CPU are your bottlenecks.

4GB isnt enough anymore, 8GB is pretty much minimum. Athlons arent really that great and the R9 290x is a very potent GPU. you shure its a 290x and not a 390x? afaik the 290x only has 4GB

Hi,

lets see if you can and want to help me. My system is still in construction and i want to make sure its as close to perfect as it can be.

My goal is to build a gaming pc thats right in the sweet spot using parts that were top notch a few months ago, but dropped in price significantly cause something newer was released. Im trying to always get the best performance per buck and also have a system thats future proof, so that i wont have to upgrade it in 2 years or less. But upgradability was also a concern, hence some of my decisions:

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Ultra Gaming WITH Optane Memory 200$

-> Reasoning: Its a motherboard with enough RAM slots to upgrade, hence future proof. Good enough sound chip so i wont need anything else, and the Optane memory can make my 1TB HDD into a semi SSD.

480 GB Kingstong SSD for 85$ -> for Windows and some core programms like steam

1 TB HDD 80$

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX1070Ti  for 550$ -> almost the same performance as the GTX 1080 but for much less money. Should be a great GPU for the years to come

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 2700x for 370$ -> ver good processor and with the number of cores it should be future proof, especially if more games are released that dont focus on single core performance but can use all the cores the amd ryzen 7 provides. Also its great value since the processor comes with a fan that even looks nice

My goal was to get below 1300$, but as you can see im well above budget and havent even selected RAM yet. So my question is, do those parts work well together?, is something bottlenecked? can i replace some parts with cheaper alternatives without losing much if any performance? What RAM would you suggest? Id reckon at least 2 x 8GB?

Kind regards

Chris

I watched this video a good while back and don't have much desire to watch it again.

That being said the bottleneck term is being thrown around too often as this big terrible thing. The truth is there will ALWAYS be a bottleneck. There is always going to be a component in your Rig that will hold back the rest of the system, this is just the way of things. If you have a high end video card and want crazy FPS numbers at 1080p or lower then chances the CPU is going to be the bottleneck... this is going to be the case until draw calls are better distributed across the CPU. If you want to play at high resolutions like 4k then the GPU is now going to become the bottleneck

It is a balancing act. I can take pretty much any CPU and GPU combo and introduce a scenario that causes either component to become a bottleneck. For Example I can take a 9900K overclocked to 5.3ghz pair it with a 1030 GT turn the resolution down to 480p and all settings to low... that will shift the bottleneck to the CPU. I can take an old 2.8ghz core 2 quad CPU and pair it with a 1080ti and toss a 4k game at it with everything maxed out... chances are the 1080ti is going to be the bottleneck.

Then you have scenarios where a game loads lots of textures/assets as you move through the map. In this scenario you would see huge dips in fps or even temporary freezes as that loading takes place on a slow drive. In this scenario your storage solutions becomes the bottleneck.

You might be playing a game at high settings with only 4gb of system ram. Well once the game needs more than those 4gb of ram and it starts using the windows page file the fps would drop significantly and all around performance would be bad. This would mean your ram is the bottleneck.

People need to be less concerned about there being a bottleneck, but instead focus on where that bottleneck is occurring. If I have a 144hz monitor, but my CPU bottlenecks my gpu so my fps can only hit 160 then that isn't something to be concerned over.

I would aim for something similar to this. It can be had for even cheaper with some part swaps, but the overall stats would stay roughly the same.

I'm not too experienced building but, looking at pcpartpicker, your motherboard will not allow for a higher cpu to be used. Id recommend  saving for a 1070/1080. That or just wait untill you feel like a new rig, and upgrade all the way around?

Thanks for the reply. Well the motherboard is a little cheaper, but without the OP the 3TB HDD is just a plain HDD. So id say thats worth the extra few bucks.

Why did you choose a GTX 1080? Its way more expensive and pretty much the same as the GTX1070Ti. Or did i miss something?

Regarding the case im gonna get a NZXT Source 340 in black. Got enough front usb ports and is solid metal so it will last quite a long time.

Does the ADATA -XPG GAMMIX D10 have any advantages over other memory? Really have no clue what to pick there :/

Im also not sure what cooling system i should get. The case supports several fans and got 2 included. But im not sure whether or not i should replace the ones that are included, how many fans i should add, watercooling or not etc. I think im gonna skip RGB fans cause they are just more expensive and im out for performance.
