My new build after 10 year old PC

lordbaal

I'm building a new PC. Going to replace a 10 year old computer I built 10 years ago. Which is an Core 2 duo E5400, 4GB RAM(the max motherboard can support), 9400 GT.

I won't be doing any photo or video editing. If I do do(LOL) and photo editing, it will be basic stuff. Like crop, copy, paste. Stuff you can easily do i MS paint.

It's not that slow, but it sometimes is slow. Especially when I'm online. Apps take like 4 or 5 seconds to open.

Most intensive thing I will be going is playing GTA 5. I That won't run on my system. But GTA 4 runs like crap.

Maybe I'll also play some Forza.

Later on I can always get a GPS. Right now they aren't as expansive as I thought.

Last time I checked prices on them, like a year ago, the previous generation, was like $400-$500.

So is this a good build?

Newegg

G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400
$154.99

EVGA 650 BQ 110-BQ-0650-V1 80+ BRONZE 650W Semi Modular Includes FREE Power On Self Tester Power Supply
$54.99

AMD RYZEN 5 2400G Quad-Core 3.6 GHz (3.9 GHz Turbo) Processor, ASUS TUF B450M-PLUS GAMING AM4 AMD B450 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 HDMI uATX AMD Motherboard
$241.98

Corsair CC-9011075-WW Carbide Series 100R
$49.99

ASUS 24X DVD Burner

15.99

Subtotal: $517.94
Tax:  $34.85
Shipping $8.16
Grand Total: $560.95

Amazon

Subtotal $535.90
Tax $34.23
Grand total: $570.13

Gift card -$70.61
Tax $33.59 (tax lowered)
Order total: $498.88

The exact same parts on both, except for the RAM. It was like $20 more on Amazon. So I choose the Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 2400MHz. For $148

Amazon was really only to price shop. It shows that Amazon is not always the cheapest.

I thought the mobo was going to be the hardest to choose, it was the case. I tried to keep it under $50, but most of them were ugly, plastic fron panels that looked like it had no airflow.

What happened to Tigerdirect? They have garbage now. 99% of it say out of stock. Years ago they had good stuff, I built my last PC with everything I got from them.

Hi there! :)

Well I cannot help you with reselers as long as I live in sweden and we buy everything with our protection laws locally here :PxD

But I've built my computer recently and I could give you some (very personal advice).

First I see you have no GPU in your budget. And for gaming that is the bread and butter. 95% of what you're gonna be able to do with GTA 4 or 5 is coming from your graphic card (no, this games at 1080p won't be held back by your CPU, dont worry).

And again I don't know what prizes you have where you live but a good advice for what you're aming for would be building a computer around a selected graphic card.

I personally recommend you go for the GTX 1060. AMD is cheaper but performancewise.... there is no match right now in the market with Nvidia. Better cooldown, better power efficiency... For me there is a no brainer if you mind what you are building to save some cash and put a GTX in your rig :)

So summarizing, choose a graphic card and look for prebuilt systems that have it or try to build your own. There is offers on prebuilt systems sometimes that are worth the penny.

The Ryzen is pretty good for gaming but if you plan on playing heavier games you should get the normal 1400 and get a GPU, what will be your budget for one?

I budget is $500(without a GPU), without tax. I didn't realize RAM was that expensive, that's why I went over.

I was looking at $400 for the motherboard, memory, and CPU.

The reason I went with the CPU, is because the integrated graphics. They supposed to be better then Intel's.

I also seen videos where people was playing GTA 5 on 1080, with just the Vega graphics, with like 40-50 FPS.

I was also looking at prebuilt systems, but they have like 400 watt PSU, with a GPU. Or like 250 watts without one.

I was thinking about getting https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.3754520 But I would need to spend another $78 for the memory to be the same.

Or for me to just put 8 GB into Ryzen. So for me to buy more memory, it would cost about $550 then.

Or to take out memory from the Ryzen, it would then cost me $443. With out the DVD drive, it would cost me like another $30.

What ever, too much math now. It would cost more for that system, even without the DVD drive.

Anyway, I built a capable system for less, and more powerful.

I'm not into shooting games. That's why I don't think I need a dedicated GPU.

This board support a 1060, I can always add one on later if need be.

I was just checking prebuilds. If I buy a prebuild, I would need to either upgrade the memory or the PSU, to get it to the specs of this build. It would costs more.

Once you start getting to $800 and above, maybe it cost effective to buy a prebuild, and cheaper or around the same.

But at $500, it seems like it would be cheaper to build it yourself.
