I have an iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) which I would like to use as a Monitor for my newer late 2015 iMac with target display mode over mini-DisplayPort. However, I have another Windows desktop with Displayport and VGA output for office work purposes, which I intend to also utilize the old iMac's display as I have limited space on my desk.

I have found out that mini-DisplayPort/DisplayPort KVM is costly. Will the target display mode still work if I use a HDMI to miniDP connector to the old iMac, then use a cheap Displayport&miniDP to HDMI KVM to connect the new iMac with the Windows desktop?

This is what I am trying to replicate, however as the old iMac doesn't have 4k nor 60 hertz, I won't need something that OP.

Thanks!

I don't think the iMac allows display in. It's mini DP doesn't work that way.

Its an old iMac, its one of the only ones that support display in, it currently works with only new iMac outputting to the old iMac via mini-DP connection
