Money Making as a Uni Student

Inversion

Not sure if this should be here or in Off-Topic but I'm starting uni in a month and was wondering if anyone knew of any ways to make a bit of side money off being a tech enthusiast. I have a fair bit of knowhow in Windows and Android. And I build my own and my parents' systems and have done hardware troubleshooting to some extent.

I know the obvious answer is to get a part time job but I'm going to a university town and there are a lot of people trying to get jobs and I've not had a lot of luck getting a job in my home town.

FYI, I'm in Scotland, UK.

Any suggestions welcome.

You could offer your services to repair/fix peoples phones/pcs etc. Advertise it locally within the student halls, you never know it might take off.

Make and sell vape juice. There's a crazy margin and it's pretty easy to make

That's an F in the profile pic

I'm confused by what you're trying to say? Do you mean about advertising internally? Because i don't see anything wrong with putting up/ handing out flyers.

Mine had notice boards outside every flat in the halls, and on the entrance to each block of flats, in the laundry rooms  & the common rooms that people could put up any things they wanted to advertise and they were quite popular as a lot of the clubs and bars would put around stuff for discounts etc. so people used to look at them quite a lot.

Basically, it depends on the Uni in question.

I would say If you have enough money to pass by, just educate yourself about 1 or 2 things that you're going to do really good, and monetize it later. For example if you picture yourself as a programmer, start learning Python/JavaScript etc and monetize your programming abillities later for a lot more money than just "fixing phones or pc's". Else, if you are indeed in a money rush then try to look what most of students use or talk about and try to make it easier for them to get it from you, for example if they smoke a lot try to sell some e-cigars or whatever that tobaco thing etc etc etc. Good luck!

I have thought about this. I might end up doing that. I'm not at uni yet so I don't know how strict they are about advertising in uni buildings but might be worth a shot.

Bar work and waiting tables

I'd rather not say where but my worry is that is there are a limit to the number of jobs for those and I reckon it'll go to people with experience of that. My limited experience is retail.

Upgrades and repairs on PCs are probably a good idea. They're pretty easy on desktops and some laptops aren't too bad but phones are a bit of a nightmare so I'd probably stay away.

Given that I have a fundamental issue with the idea of vapes I'm gonna say no to that one.

you can always work on campus. that is way more constant source of cash, but you can always do tech repair and upgrades on the side too

That’s probably your best option though. Part time minimum wage jobs are hardly worth it. I suppose you could always do temp work on a construction site in the summer. But that’s slave work.

It just sucks being a student because almost nobody will want to hire you because of availability and loyalty concerns.

check out the career services center at your school and see if there are any job fairs.

and this may be a little early, but look for paid internships. tho i think this may depend on what field in tech you're going into

edit: pick an internship that is relevant for your field. enhances your resume but also opportunity  to become full-time

I would only consider working if it is related to your degree. So you gain experience. I would else just focus on the best grades possible. The exception is when you can´t make it without working.

Got any camera skills? You can make pretty good amount by shooting and starring in home made porn. Prostitution, drug dealing, and pimping out others are illigitimate but also common means for college kids to make money.

Edit: okay, I will give some actual advice instead of just being silly. Look for on campus jobs. Univiersty is the biggest employer in most neighborhoods. They hire students for anything from tutor to adjunct professor. Of course, you must be graduate student to be doing the latter. Always look for paid internships but do note that you aren't above flipping burgers if it comes to that.

Edit: don't forget to visit your college career office to learn interviewing skills, resume and cover letter writing, and how to dress and be confident. Watch YouTube for advice also.

Oops, wrong videos.
