Premiere Pro and After Effects, GPU or CPU Intensive?

I've finally convinced my school to sell the 4 2013 macs we have collecting dust in exchange for 1 powerhouse of a PC, with a budget of around $2000.

 

Now that I've got the money in hand, I need to know which component to prioritize for the build. I'm looking for maximum performance capability in Pr and Ae, but don't really know if I should prioritize GPU or CPU power for this build. I do know that heavy $ improvements in GPU's dont affect render times more than a few seconds or even 1-2 minutes, which I'm comfortable in sacrificing considering I'm going to be needing prioritization of only 1080p exports rather than 4K exports (since I can leave it to run for a while when I'm not using it. I only need the faster 1080p since that's what's going to be widely spread and presented). I do want some future-proofing considering we probably wont get an opportunity like this again. At the same time, I'd like at least decent timeline performance in Pr and Ae though I'm not previewing at full quality and usually stick to 1/4 or smaller (given the opportunity) since I don't need the best quality then-and-there

 

With the CPU topic in mind as well, would the two programs benefit from more cores and threads? With the budget in mind I'll probably settle on an i7 comfortably so I'm not really worried but I'd like to see if I can get any better deal from Ryzen or even secondhand Theadripper (this option of course being available if Pr and Ae favor core performance and threads) for thread and core value.

 

I've never built a computer for this purpose and am finally upgrading from a single 2013 iMac with an i5 to this beast. Thanks for any help.

Anything past 8 cores Adobe CC won't use and GPU is only used for certain affects that allow it. I would put money into fast NVME storage. On a sidenote Final Cut Pro would probably be faster and run better on a 2013 mac than Premiere does on a 2K PC. It is miles more optimized

Just keeping this here as a I typically use cpu rendering for editing , then gpu for the final render. For whatever reason the gpu tends to be less stable in editing than it does the final render. in a lot of cases if it's set up right a gpu could outperform a cpu , but it depends on what the project exactly is and how good the program is at using the gpu. I'd say for future proofing just go all in on cpu with a basic gpu. I DO know that after effects and premiere will 100% load any amount of cores while editing for previews , the programs will sometimes load less core in the final render. 

So I'd say a machine with maximum cpu / ram / and ssd speed will be best. you can skimp on the gpu so long as it's compatible with 4k and such. If you don't mind moving project files around you can even skimp on the ssd's size , but not it's speed

Yes that should do quite well.

I know premiere changes quite a lot every other year so I'd keep off of gpu rendering only becuase i have no clue if they will suddenly change how it's works or how it's supported. I know that cpu rendering will always be a thing so it seems the safer route to go with the upper end cpu over gpu.

I do know that there is an option in Premiere to use a GPU (OpenCL or Cuda) for rendering, does that use it for the timeline?

yeah it can

I tend to not use it becuase it make premiere crash on my specific system. You may have more luck with it though. I DO use it for the final render sometimes.

I use an old supermicro dual xeon that is set to be replaced in september. I don't know if i'd recommend the multisocket solution for you but the i7 seemed like it may be a good route.

I don't think Xeon is good considering the fact that the good old ones restrict you to DDR3 or even 2

 

On that note do you tink RAM hinders Pr performance that much? Like if I were to put DDR3 1333 up to DDR4 2800 is there that big of a jump?

if you have a fast drive and cpu , then the ram almost doesnt matter in terms of speed as the actual processing of the data and fetching from the drive always tend to be slower. 

once your project is loaded into the ram i'd say theres almost no difference between ddr3 and 4 that is going to be noticeable.
