Hey guys!

So I have given myself around a 3000 dollar budget on my next build (give or take), and I built this part list.

But I have been doubting myself, because I know that I could get more performance for the same price, if I just ditch the water cooling idea and go air. So I have a couple of ideas and I need some people to tell my insane mind if it's sane to do it or not. :P

I mainly game and stream. Some video editing, but not enough that I will really need a enthusiast CPU.

IDEA 1:

Full custom water loop, as I mentioned before. I already planned this out completely and I could order the parts right now. If you guys have any critics about it please tell me!

IDEA 2:

Dual PC setup. Sometimes for streaming, and also so I can move around the mouse and do stuff on the other PC while still in the game. Removes the inconvenience for me. (I am a frequent alt taber in games)

It will be a 8700k for the gaming PC and a 1st or 2nd gen ryzen for the second. I haven't made a part list yet, but they will both go into the yet to be released evolv X.

IDEA 3:

Same thing as above, but running a NAS server to synchronize the OS between the two?? Is that possible? Please enlighten me. I just don't want to have to figure out what to download and what PC to download them on, etc etc.

IDEA 4:

My last and final idea is to just go all out and build a threadripper or core i9 build, even though I don't really need it, but it will actually be an increase in "performance" overall rather than spending 1k on water cooling parts.

Guys, enlighten me. What is the best thing to do in this situation? Any other ideas? Help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Oh wow I'm no PC builder and I really don't know what I'm talking about (I've learned everything off of YouTube videos and no experience) and really new when it comes to these things but I have a sort of opinion for each idea from an outsiders point of view.

Idea 1:

Wow, badass bragging rights PC my friend.

Idea 2:

Really smart and comparing idea 2 to idea 4, idea 2 is better. You really don't need an overkill pc. (Unless you want to use it for several several years)

Idea 3:

I'm sorry I know little about networking. No opinion. ?

Idea 4:

even if your also going to be using better graphics card(s) you don't need these crazy specs unless you are consistently doing a heavy workload, or plan on not needing to buy a PC for a long time, go for this build.

But yeah I'm no pro ? good luck!

Really nice suggestion, thank you. But wouldn't the threadripper get way way way less frames than a 8700k? I'm not a pro streamer, just do it for fun. Do you still think it's worth it?

Don't we all learn everythig from yt? :D

I might go for an SLI setup as well, but still not 100% sure as 1180s may come out sooner than later, which will probs make me very upset about spending 1500+ on a SLI setup.

More of a casual streamer an 2700x would be a better choice. 1950x is more for bragging rights really. The threadripper gets decent amount of frames. Less than an 8700k, but you wont need to swap the CPU for a long while.

Again a 2700x would be a better an more economical choice

SLI is a waste of money in todays gaming world. Better to just spend on 1 GPU and splurge elsewhere

at that point its better to buy a threadripper. the 7900xe doesnt overclock that well and is just generally a worse buy thatn the threadrippers. the threadrippers still offer a good framerate. just not as many as the 8700k.

they are in a tiny minority of the minority. SLI is pretty much dead. the support for it is also just getting worse by the year

So 2700x + 8700k is also a bad idea as well? I feel like it would be better performing and be more convenient.

it will be a better idea. either that, it will be a mix of both worlds. the 2700x will also offer a good upgrade path if you so choose so. combine those two build with synergy to minimize the setup

How will synergy work exactly? I know it sync the mouse and stuff, but will it sync the files, etc?

it allows the transfer of files between the PCs. as far as i know it doesnt sunc files, but you can set up one of the PCs as a NAS, that way it will sync files. and files will be retriavable from both PCs

pretty much. id set the secondary PC as a NAS as you will have to send files over ethernet almost regardless of how you do it. i think synergy transfers them fast anyway.

i dont actually have many details. i would recommend you look into it for yourself

Okay! Thanks for all the help!

If I make the main PC the NAS though, wouldn't it be much faster, as gigabyte ethernet would be the bottlecap?

EDIT: What I mean is wouldn't it be faster for the main PC, as that is what I would game with.

Hey.. Just wanna ask. Did you accidentally choose 2 CPU coolers, or is there a purpose for it? Just curious :)

oh damn. i guess PCpartpicker doesnt remove the coolers as they are technically elligably for Dualsocket Epyc servers. i did know about that caviat, bu i forgot about it.

also i forgot to mention that he should choose the case he wants

get a 10Gbit network card to link the two PCs. it will never be the bottleck then. they cost a bit, but your budget has quite a bit of headroom as the secondary PC doesnt need a beefy GPU.

So basically just link the two with LAN, but with 2 10 gbit pcie adapters?

Main PC > PCIE adapter > LAN > PCIE adapter > 2nd PC

V

Storage

V

NAS software

Now I just gotta figure out how to do this in one case. :D
