It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's Government Surveillance! - China launches high-tech bird drones

Business Insider

TL;DR:

China has upped its constant government surveillance by releasing drones disguised as birds. These drones can be hard to detect due to their realistic movement.

Media:
China deploys spy drone

Quotes/Excerpts:

Quote

China already uses biometrics to identify Beijing metro commuters , facial recognition surveillance at large events and smart glasses to assist police in apprehending criminals... trying out a flock of new "Dove" drones... already been tested in regions such as Xinjiang, where they've gone completely undetected... able to replicate about 90% of the movements of a real dove... More than 2,000 tests were carried out on some of the drones... a built-in high-definition camera, a GPS antenna, a flight control system and data link with satellite communication... speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour (25 MPH) for up to 30 minutes... design could deceive even highly sensitive radars, posing a real threat to air defence systems.

Quote

More than 30 military and official agencies have used the technology on the field... actually imitate the flapping motion of a bird’s wings to manoeuvre in the air... so lifelike and so noiseless... flying it above a flock of sheep... the notoriously skittish creatures didn’t bat an eye... Song says his artificial birds can still be improved... can’t maintain their “flight” under heavy winds and are unable to travel long distances... All caveats will be solved with advancements in AI...  the technology has been extensively used in the far Western autonomous region of Xinjiang Uygur...

My Thoughts:

An interesting and scary method of surveillance. I'm quite sure all Chinese Citizens are aware that they're being monitored 24/7. Perhaps this is a method to try to catch those trying to hide from the normal surveillance to not affect their "Social Credit". I'm sure the USA is just fine with people being allowed to freely spill all their dirty secrets on data obtained from Google and Facebook.

In China you have no privacy. Jaywalking will have your picture taken and displays on big screens, and a fine sen to your phone.

(https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/china-police-facial-recognition-technology-ai-jaywalkers-fines-text-wechat-weibo-cctv-a8279531.html and https://mashable.com/2017/06/21/china-facial-recognition-jaywalkers-shaming/#h0GomlRN7qqw)

Now, a school is putting cameras in class rooms, monitoring students behavior with facial tracking.

Nah, China doesn't do public physical torture. They'd likely just completely destroy you quietly by removing your healthcare, access to government paperwork, oh and throttling/denying internet access. Their Social Credit system is scary.

I always wanted to hunt doves.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

Time to build some hawk drones

Sauron'stm Product Scores:

Spoiler

Just a list of my personal scores for some products, in no particular order, with brief comments. I just got the idea to do them so they aren't many for now :)

Don't take these as complete reviews or final truths - they are just my personal impressions on products I may or may not have used, summed up in a couple of sentences and a rough score. All scores take into account the unit's price and time of release, heavily so, therefore don't expect absolute performance to be reflected here.

-Lenovo Thinkpad X220 - [8/10]

Spoiler

A durable and reliable machine that is relatively lightweight, has all the hardware it needs to never feel sluggish and has a great IPS matte screen. Downsides are mostly due to its age, most notably the screen resolution of 1366x768 and usb 2.0 ports.

-Apple Macbook (2015) - [Garbage -/10]

Spoiler

From my perspective, this product has no redeeming factors given its price and the competition. It is underpowered, overpriced, impractical due to its single port and is made redundant even by Apple's own iPad pro line.

-OnePlus X - [7/10]

Spoiler

A good phone for the price. It does everything I (and most people) need without being sluggish and has no particularly bad flaws. The lack of recent software updates and relatively barebones feature kit (most notably the lack of 5GHz wifi, biometric sensors and backlight for the capacitive buttons) prevent it from being exceptional.

-Microsoft Surface Book 2 - [Garbage - -/10]

Spoiler

Overpriced and rushed, offers nothing notable compared to the competition, doesn't come with an adequate charger despite the premium price. Worse than the Macbook for not even offering the small plus sides of having macOS. Buy a Razer Blade if you want high performance in a (relatively) light package.

-Intel Core i7 2600/k - [9/10]

Spoiler

Quite possibly Intel's best product launch ever. It had all the bleeding edge features of the time, it came with a very significant performance improvement over its predecessor and it had a soldered heatspreader, allowing for efficient cooling and great overclocking. Even the "locked" version could be overclocked through the multiplier within (quite reasonable) limits.

-Apple iPad Pro - [5/10]

Spoiler

A pretty good product, sunk by its price (plus the extra cost of the physical keyboard and the pencil). Buy it if you don't mind the Apple tax and are looking for a very light office machine with an excellent digitizer. Particularly good for rich students. Bad for cheap tinkerers like myself.

This is one of those, "you know, I think the Internet was a mistake" type of stories.

Sadly most people think of the internet as a standalone thing or entity that we could have stopped or created differently.

Internet is nothing more than a network of computers connected togheter, and ISP's provide that connection today, but really anyone can make "the internet" if it was all shutdown tommorrow.

Simply connect your small village's computers to the same network and voila you now have internet, it may not be global but its a network of computers that can communicate with each other via various protocols/software.

Ever heard of meshnet, yeah anyone can "make" the internet nowdays.

As long as the computers exists with network chips and routers/switches there will be internet.

So internet is not a mistake, unless the entire semiconducter industry is, because internet happens almost naturally as long as you have computers, its just convenient to share data over such fast networks .

Internet/computers can no longer be contained they will always exist from now on, you might censor/block parts of internet but you cant take it out completely without taking computers out of the world... good luck with that.

And let's not forget that western countries like the UK and US are moving in this direction too.

Maybe not the public shaming on big screens, but most certainly in the case of surveillance and censorship of "troublesome" ideas.

Well it's a still image and you have a close up view of it.

Probably a lot harder to see that it's a drone if it's far up in the sky and moving.

I guess if it’s pretty far, but it needs more colour to pass really. Maybe it’s just a prototype or they don’t have birds in China because of the smog.
