I am looking to upgrade my gaming PC. Background info: I am in Canada, my budget this upgrade time is in $1000 range (so I think either video card, OR, mobo/ram/cpu, but not both), I have recently upgraded my case (so it can fit any mobo) and power supply (corsair 650 watt) and have only minimal plans for RGB. My current set up is an 4th gen i5, and a GTX 950 video card, Sansung EVO SSD. The games I play (be nice!) are FF14, NWO, and No Man's Sky. But i want to be ready for the next Elder Scrolls, as well.

So, I *think* my bottleneck is video card, so I am thinking of getting a 1080ti, but I don't know. Id there a good way of telling which would be the better path to take?

Thanks in advance.

If youre willing to spend all the way up to what a 1080ti costs, upgrade everything - but mainly the cpu, motherboard, ram and then get a cheaper graphics card like a 1070 or 1060 6gb

@Slottr I was thinking either x2700 + ram and mobo or i7 8700k + mobo and ram would be in the $900 to 1100 range, leaving nothing for video card... then i would stick with my gtx950 for a while and upgrade that in 6 months or so... what would your suggestion look like specifically? My plan is to get one of those areas to a high level, then do the other side later, also to a higher level

Are you just gaming? If so go for the 8700k then and wait it out to buy a new card.

Besides, ES 6 wont be out for a looooong time

Based on a 1000 CAD budget. It will be a general upgrade rather than specific.

Thanks @GoldenLag but my goal is to aim a bit higher, and to do that I am planning to split the upgrade into two parts over 6 months... your build is great but I would really rather spend the money to get this to the next level...the question is more about which one would get me the most bang for the buck... or more specifically... which part of my current build sucks the most. haha.

@Konrad_K that is true, but that's the point... get one side to a good level, then in 6 months, get the other side to a similar level. It seemed like a good plan to me...? Or am I wrong, and I should be doing everything to get a 'decent' upgrade?

Id recommend getting a 1070 card or higher, then wait untill April to upgrade the CPU, mobo, Ram to a Ryzen 3000 series

The new cards are coming out in the near future so than get yourself a 8700K Z370 board and 16GB of ram, or go team red and Get yourself a 2700X a X470 mobo and 16GB of ram too.

And I am on the fence about team red or team blue... I would like to support team red because team blue are d*******s but it really is a better choice for my use case. Suggestions and guidance on that is also appreciated! As is all the advice here so far! thanks!

@GoldenLag and @Konrad_K conflicting suggestions... someone want to come in with the tie breaker??

Your CPU is still very decent and will keep up for quite a while. Currently the GPU is the worst component. New cards are coming, though still a couple months away. A new GPU will serve you excellebt regardless of what new cards come out, not to mention the new cards are rumoured to be rather expencive.

Ryzen 3000 april next year will offer the best CPU upgrade to compliment the GPU. Getting an 8700k now will just be a bad experience without a new GPU and your CPU can hold on untill april
