3 tb HDD for $100?

so ive seen a hard drive 3 tb 7200 RPM by seagate for $84.99 its got 409 reviews with 4 stars but in the past 2 weeks apparently 61% of reviews are one star?? ... so does that mean go with someone else? or... 

 

If not can someone leave suggestions? Thanks!

If you don't mind a somewhat loud-ish drive, these are hard to beat for the price. They're very reliable, but a bit on the noisier side for HDD's.  If I'm in a heavy use scenario, I can hear the drive over my fans sometimes

I use mine for my entire steam library.  It works great.  But if my fans are going slow (and quiet) the HDD noise is noticeable.  If the fans are ramped up, it drowns out the HDD noise.

i play my games through my speakers... will it sound that out? also im guessing while im installing all my games on this hard drive its gonna sound super loud at full blast?

It's a light clicking sound.  Easily outpaced by speakers even at low volume.  For someone who acoustics REALLY REALLY matter, it's gonna bug ya, if you can deal with the occasional clicking from the heads, then it's a damn good deal.

i generally use the below for my usage

 

• Hitachi - important storage of files (which are backed up once a week), most reliable
• Seagate - Good for gaming and frequently used files due to high read/write speeds, but may not last as long as some other brands
• WD - External drives and backups
• Toshiba - I avoid

how long does seagate last usually?

if you can... is there a way you can send a video of what it sounds like? cause im a man where if i want to sleep i dont want to hear many noises when im sleeping

just keep in mind they are not designed to be on 24/7 so if you never turn your PC off it would not be recommended to get a barracuda

arnt ssd's god awful expensive when its higher than 500 gb tho?

i dont want to worry about my hard drive failing though... my pc isnt AMAZING... its a gtx 1050 ti with a g4560... would you still recommend seagate?

They are yes, but they are much better if you can spare the money and justify the price. personally i only have a 120 GB SSD for my OS and a few select programs and a 500GB for games (Primarily simulations), everything else gets dumped onto 1 of 5 HDDs depending on what it is.

 

keep stuff backed up and the failure rates of HDD no longer matter

so just go for seagate?

It's in my PC at my shop, I won't be back there until Wednesday.

That being said, it only makes noise when you're accessing it hard.  It's near silent when idle.

Generally HDD's do last for 3-5 years on average, or 2-3 years with heavier usage. That being said, you'll want to backup your data from day 1 as a hard drive is dying the moment it's powered on for the first time. Also note that I've had enterprise drives die in 3 months of ownership, and yet still have a cheap-ass 80GB WD drive from eons ago that's slow as hell but still works just fine.

Not anymore. If you check Amazon, you'll see the Crucial's MX500 series has come down in price immensely for their 1TB SKUs. Anything over 1TB is still quite expensive though, but prices only keep coming down, so you could always get a 1TB SSD for games, and a 2TB spinning rust disk for other data.

If you get a good brand like WD (as opposed to something like Seagate) they'll usually last a lot longer. I've got drives that are 15 years old.

I recently added 2x 4tb Hitachi 7200rpm drives to my unraid server I purchased at Fry's for $99 each after promo code. They have decent warranties on them.
