So I have this config at the moment:

- I5 6400

- GTX 960

- 1 500GB SSD

- 1 5400 4TB HDD

- 1 7200 1TB HDD

- 2 120mm fans

- 2 x 8GB DDR4 2400Mhz

- 500W EVGA PSU

So, I want to upgrade and put, at first a I5 8600k (and so change Mobo) then, after maybe 1-2 months because... money.... I'd like to pop in a GTX 1070.

So when should I upgrade this PSU, or do I even have to upgrade? I'm not planning on OC so take stock speed of all components that could be OC. By asking when, I mean, can I do my CPU upgrade without changing PSU?

Thanks for you answers ;)

Depends on what 500W EVGA PSU you have, what model is it?

In terms of wattage, it'll work but I'm concerned about quality.

It's 80+ according to what I see on the label. It's 1 and a half Years-old.

Does the label list model number?

If it's just an EVGA - 430W/500W/600W 80 PLUS unit then it's considered pretty bad. Not fire hazard bad but not far off from it so I would try to find a CX (2017) on sale or something and swap it out for that which is a much more solid PSU.

Edit:

Yup, it's just a standard 80 Plus unit which are pretty bad.

Well, could it still handle a I5 8600k without OC or should I really buy a new one before doing this upgrade ? If I absolutly need to upgrade, what PSU would you recommand me?

If you don't stress it you will probably be fine until you can get a better unit. The Corsair CX (2017) models are pretty solid and almost always on sale for pretty cheap too which makes them highly recommended.

For the moment, I only record some LeagueOfLegends gamplays, edit them a little then store them on a HDD. So I could edit around 10-20hrs per month so I don't think this is stressing too much. Also, I planned on upgrading the PSU when I'll get a new GPU (1070 in my case)

That 500W 80 PLUS EVGA unit is pretty meh. I would not install a 1070 in a system running that PSU for an extended period of time.

A Corsair CX450/CX450M is not very expensive and can power your system just fine.

Could I still put a 8600k without OC with this PSU? And then upgrade it when I'll have the money to afford the 1070 ?

Sure. Have you checked used listings for GTX 1070s?

Yes I did but since I have a I5 6400, to upgrade to a I5 8600k, I also need a Mobo Upgrade sooo, for me it's like 520$ (CANADIAN) (CPU + Mobo upgrade) and a 1070, the lowest I found, is like 450$ (CANADIAN) so at the moment, I don't have that extra 450$ to spend on a GPU.

Why not get something like a 7700k? Don't need a whole platform upgrade. You could get a non-K SKU chip if your board doesn't support OC

There the thing, for now, with this PSU, I don't really want to OC, but eventually I would and right now, my Mobo doesn't support OC sooo I wouldn't spend money on non K CPU this time.

What ever, I made my choise on the CPU + Mobo upgrade. I just came here to see if I had to upgrade the PSU before doing this CPU + Mobo upgrade.

500 watts is plenty, but that PSU is mediocre at best. Terrible value when compared to others in its price range. I would say, before upgrading to any more high end hardware, get at least a Corsair CXM (2015) at minimum. At best, a SeaSonic FOCUS.

No. Why would you want to replace your crappy EVGA unit with another crappy EVGA unit, instead of the grey CX/M that has been recommended?

Uh, 450W will be enough to OC a I5 8600k and to run a 1070 ?

It could be squeezed in. I would go 550w for that. And the green label cxms are lousy. Go for the grey labels
