My PSU has a weird chemical like smell coming from it.

Hi, I bought a new PSU and there seems to be a weird chemical smell coming from it. I can't smell it while I'm sitting at my PC but rather I can only smell it when I put MY NOSE RIGHT NEXT TO the PSU(I'm weird I know.). I've had the PSU for about a week now.

Does the smell increase when the PSU is under load? If so, that could be some material melting because of the heat; if the noise is only subtle and is present even after like 24h the PC is off, then you shouldn't worry

I mean, the smell doesn't really increase even when I'm playing something on my PC. It stays the same. Also, by noise, did you mean smell?

if it's brand new it's probably the silica gel it was packed with. power supplies don't smell like lavender when they're new

Just now, Majestic said:

That's normal for new components when they heat up. It could also be the glue you're smelling, that prevents the components from making noise.

Should go away after a bit though.

How long do you think it should take for the smell to go away? I've had this PSU for about a week now.

Yeah, that was a habit typo xD
If it stays the same, that's probably the normal PSU smell; I've never personally got near one and smelled its internals on purpose, so I'm not sure if it's common to all PSUs, but I guess you shouldn't be worried

All my new components smelt like some form of toxic plastic, at some point it will stop as some materials give off vapors which overtime die down. Its akin to new carpet smell or even new paint smell, vapors are leaking out slowly. As long as it doesn't become a notable issue (not smelling it from up close) then all is well.

It's flux. There's a post about this every week. It's nothing to worry about, it's normal, it'll go away

:)

Maybe two, three to four months.  Depends on temperature and time, so it's completely a crap shoot for you to ask us when it will go away.
