Question about PCI E slot on GPU

So I’m new with graphics cards and stuff and I have a question. I just removed my gtx1060 which used a single (6-hole?) pci e slot. I’m upgrading to a 1080ti and it has 1 (6hole) pci e slot and 1 (8hole) pci e slot. My power supply only has two 6 hole pci e plugs and I’m wondering if I can plug a 6 hole pci e plug into an 8 hole pci e slot? Sorry if this is confusing but I hope I got my question accross. I’ll attach an image

Physically, yes. But it won't work (at least, not properly). GPUs generally require all pins to be connected. 

 

You'll either need to get a PCIe 6 pin to 8 pin adaptor or a new PSU that has an 8 pin connector. To be honest, if you PSU doesn't have a 8 pin connector, I would recommend buying a new one for a GPU like a 1080Ti.

what power supply is it? chances are if it doesn't even have an 8pin pci-e connector then it's old or just junk.

I’ve only had it for a year, and bought it from Best Buy. I’ll check the PSU but no it doesn’t have an 8 pin

nevermind found it. It’s 600W

if you don't quote people they wont know you've responded. if the machine has an unbranded cheapo power supply then don't install a 1080 into the machine until it's replaced.

It’s not unbranded, it’s called High Power brand

lul, you have 1080ti and unbranded PSU? you risk damaging the gpu, change it asap to some 550w decent brand

It’s not unbranded and I haven’t used the 1080ti yet

Well it's not from a reputed brand it might contain cheap caps and when you will hit with a load it might not be able to supply the power to 1080ti properly get a 550w or 600w power supply from some reputed brand

If the card cam with and adapter run it. But I think youd need 3 6 pin in total. Sounds like the psu needs an upgrade or the card needs to downgrade.

that's still called unbranded or generic in the PSU world, it usually means if you force it too much or need actual 600W it'll die with a loud bang
