R5 1600 vs R5 2600

Go to solution Solved by light-v,

The 1600 is certainly a better value but the IPC improvements of the 2600 might better in the long run when you replace the 1060 (most people tend to replace their gpu much sooner than their cpu)

In any case the difference is negligible even with a 1070 so you should go ahead and get the 1600 if you're limited by your budget but that doesn't make the 2600 a bad buy either

I am planning on buying a new CPU, Motherboard and RAM, since the set I use is ancient(A10-6800K, DDR3 8GB 1333MHz Crucial ). I have them paired up with a GTX 1060 3GB and I am using a 1080p monitor.

I have trouble picking a CPU ever since the new gen of Ryzen released.

I've seen benchmarks that the new generation is about 10-15% faster but those tests in games were with GTX 1080 or above. Will I notice any difference with the 1060 in games and will it worth the extra money.

r5 1600 costs 152 EUR (177 USD),with TAX

r5 2600 183 EUR (214 USD), with TAX

Thanks for clearing my mind. I will probably go with the 2600 since I am planning to upgrade my gpu in a year or less.

I mostly play games on my computer, but I also do some video editing and I study programming so the extra threads that AMD provides come in handy.

You need at least a 1080 to get the difference to come out in gaming. Main things tend to be RAM compatibility and a bit faster I/O. By the time you'd be in a place to really get the difference from a new dGPU, you'll be able to spend around 150 EUR/USD for a Ryzen 3600, which will be even better.

Edit: IPC is 3% better, but the biggest gains show up in really high refresh gaming situations because of the lower latency memory access. It's the same reason the Skylake-X cpus get murdered in a lot of games compared to normal Skylake parts. (We know why all of this happens, it's just a matter of use case & costs.)

Hontestly the 2600 isnt worth the money due to the mediocre cooler that comes with it.

You either pick a 1600 or an 2600x as the x on the second gen come with a better cooler

If you are on a budget the 1600 is the better option. Games are rarely CPU bound these days anyway
