Need help with all the 8tb drives

Guest

So my 4tb hdd is full and now i  need a 8tb one. My 4TB drive right now should be a 4TB Toshiba X300, but why the should be you ask? That is because on the amazon list, on the amazon box and on the hdd box it had written x300, but on the actual HDD itself it has written N300. So i have no idea which one it is. So that makes it a bit harder for me to get the toshiba drives, as they might ship the wrong product.

My workload is video editing, so lots of video files to store on the hdd.

So my options are:

Toshiba N300 255€ 7200rpm 128mb cache

WD red Nas drive 8TB 265€ 5400rpm 256mb cache

Seagate IronWolf 8tb 240€    7200rpm  256mb cache

Seagate SkyHawk Guardian 8tb 232€ 7200rpm  ??? cache

Seagate Barracuda Pro 8tb 287€ 7200rpm 256mb cache

So from these options IronWolf looks best, but i have had bad experience with seagate drives over the years. So have these been fixed?

Also the IronWolf Pro 8tb is 270€, what does the Pro version add? Does the Normal ironwolf have data recovery(i have heard that some seagate drives have some kind of data recovery plan) @seagate_surfer

How about the standard barracuda with a ssd cache? A fast drive isn't much faster than a lower end drive, and the ssd cache can really speed some things up.

Not available. I listed all the possiblilities i have. Also what do you mean by a ssd cache? Do you mean that i would use an 2.5 ssd with the hdd? Right now i have a free 240gb WD Green SSD i use as an external ssd, i could integrate that somehow.

Yep you can use that as a cache. Use something like storage spaces tiering that will work as a cache.

With that being the case, id go with the ironwolf.

As long as it is within 2 years i believe. Its also got a longer warranty period and lower failure rate.

Wether this is worth the extra cost is up to you

Hello Some Random Member,

The normal Ironwolf at this moment doesn't include the rescue plan in the price (it is optional), only the drives with a pro version like SkyHawk AI, IronWolf Pro and BarraCuda Pro include a plan.

You can add a rescue plan to any drive for about USD $14.99 - USD $19.99 for 2-3 years, I will paste the rescue people contact information in case you need more help: https://www.seagaterescue.com/contact

Ok. I got the normal ironwolf 8tb drive. I hope it lasts me at least 5 years.

It will, hard drives are very reliable! Just take into consideration the temperature, operating at higher temperatures above 60°C will reduce useful life of the product. And the drive load cycles was tested to 600,000 cycles, which means you can fill out the 8TB of the drive 600K times (years and years of storing data).
