Apple's new MacBook Pro lineup have a developed a way to repel dust away from the keyboard

Apple's new MacBook Pro's were announced yesterday, and many have speculated that while the keyboard has become quieter, the amount of dust gathered is still the same. Not today. iFixit reports that Apple's new keyboards now have a "silicon membrane" sitting under a key to avoid any dust or dirt from getting in.

But the company’s silence on the mechanism’s widespread mechanical issues, which Apple first acknowledged with a repair program last month, has left many scratching their heads and wondering if the new laptop’s largely unchanged keyboard is susceptible to dust and crumb contamination under the hood.

 

Now, iFixit says it’s uncovered something that indicates that the new MacBook Pro keyboards use a silicone membrane underneath each individual key to keep dirt and other unsavory particles from finding their way under the keyboard and locking it up. The repair organization dismantled a new 15-inch MacBook Pro keyboard to discover the new mechanism

 

Great to see Apple actually doing something to prevent the dust and dirt reaching the keyboards. It has been an issue for a while and this seems like a step in the right direction.

They gave the new switches foreskin and marketed it as making them more silent.

Hopefully it actually helps and doesn't get damaged when cleaning.

If they wanted to preserve the key feel (which could do with some improvement) then it probably would be damaged as it'd need to be pretty thin to not perceptibly alter it.

Well at least they did something about it. Will have to see how it holds up. If it actually works then that's more compelling to get one

How would this affect the durability in the negative? And why does a similar feeling switch change anything?

 

If the cover tears then all you have done is made it the same as the 2016/2017 keyboards.

Apple hasn't disclosed this but the MacBook Pro is only intended to be used in clean, sterilized rooms with HEPA filters like a operating room. xD

 

Someone should that that Jonathan Ive that scissor switches are still superior over his butterfly key switches.

To keep the key feel the same the membrane has too be thin. Meaning that when cleaned it will break easily. Meaning that the keyboard is more fragile when cleaned so people need to be bloody careful. As the silicon membrane breaking would allow dust into the keys and cause them to start breaking again.

TBH its just a keyboard, if you keep your laptop clean and use it properly and keep it in mind its a very expensive machine its all good.

It makes sense they wouldn't advertise it fixing the keyboard (if it actually does that). It would open them up to be liable by actually admitting there was a problem. The current replacement program isn't an admission of guilt (technically anyway) but essentially a way of saying we'll fix if it breaks but it won't break because of the implication.

Indeed, I completely agree.

Although accidents CAN happen, it really surprises me how the keyboard of some people ends up looking like after some time of use.

Egads, some of the responses here... Apple apparently fixes the problem and they're still finding ways to complain (despite a lack of evidence for their claims).   It's almost as if they're not really interested in Apple fixing the flaw, and just want an excuse to attack the company. ?

 

Seriously, folks: we have no idea how well this new protection will hold up, but it is protection, and there's no immediate reason to believe that it'll fall apart under daily use.
