It is possible but you'll need to jump the 24PIN ATX cable on the second one, it isn't a pretty sight and consider that SLI is becoming something that is just to show-off more then a value option.

No, don't do such things.

But what components are you talking about?
What kind of SLI?

What Power Supplys?
What's the Rest??

but if i just wanted to test not really a long term solution could i use the second psu to power up the second card? if i jumper it off and use the switch at the back of the psu,

ive read before that i should have somthing else hooked up like an old harddrive is that true

The PSU powering the second graphics card should have DC-DC converters inside, since the graphics card would only pull 12V.

so what would the downsides be of trying this?

Two power supplies instead of just one will consume more power, be louder, and use more space. In addition, if the PSU for the graphics card is group regulated, the graphics card may be fed lower voltage than it should have, which affects its longevity.

No. There are only risks and downsides to using two normal ATX PSUs like that. If you need more power, just get a single bigger one.

Like the people above said, there aren't many reasons of using two power supplies instead of just one good power supply

Like others are saying using one PSU is more sensible... but the idea that running two is super risky seems a bit off. If you have an extra one lying around and don't want to buy a new one to accommodate the whole system you can very easily pick up an adapter to run two:
Add2PSU

Am I saying no one has ever run into issues doing this? Of course not, but most people don't have major issues when using the proper adapters.

I'm sorry about that, I just had a really busy schedule for the past year. I may decide to pick it up again if I get some more free time in a day for a longer period of time than just a few weekends.

Generally people have the most success and least problems when using something like the add2psu, you could also just jump the second PSU with a paperclip and it should technically work. But that's usually when you start hearing stories about people accidentally burning their house down, still very unlikely that that would occur but most would recommend the add2psu if you are serious about using a second PSU.

I really wouldn't be overly worried about it regardless of which route you take.
