Shouldn't 8k be called QUHD instead of UHD?

da_knug

Now I wasn't very keen on the term UHD to begin with, I mean Ultra what bruh marketing much? 4k should IMO be called QFHD but whatever, although I guess "ULTRA high definition" sells beter than "Quad Full High Definition"

But I guess it kinda makes sense because everyone know that "ULTRA" really is just a prefix for 9...

Anyhow if we're now sticking with UHD for 4k then 8k should logically be called QUHD, "Quad Ultra High Definition"

So that would be 4x ULTRA which obviously is 36x 720p HD because quick mafs, like brah didn't you learn the multiplication table for ultra in school?

Jokes aside this also makes sense looking back at 720p HD and 1440p QHD, so why not, it's just more confusing to call EVERYTHING UHD.

What do ya'll think?

Maybe consider the fact that people call it 4k because its easier than saying UHD, and people will say 8k instead of calling it FIYFTEGKHPHD or whatever.

Edit: So, both 4k and 8k are called UHD? that's confusing.

No, one is 4K UHD and the other is 8K UHD.

They're both UHD because they're such a high res that your eyes won't be able to resolve the pixels at any reasonable viewing distance.

Why can't we just call 4k 4k and 8k 8k and be done with it?

because there's real 4k screens and then screens that are 1080 or 2k and just upscale to make a 4k panel.

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.

I just call it 4K and 8K but it’s quite a valid point

No doubt that is the reason, because they know people will just call it 8K anyway so why bother with more confusing terms.

It was bad enough when loads of supposedly HD TVs were being called HD Ready because they only displayed 720p/768p but could accept a 1080p signal and downscale it.

The TV industry just LOVE to confuse consumers.  At the moment its HDR and HDR Premium, where only HDR Premium actually uses proper HDR panels.  No doubt next it will be 8K UHD Compatible or something similar, where they are only using a 4K panel.

How about call them 2160p and 4320p because 4K and 8K mean something notably different in other film and television-related industries?

Those 4K and 8K resolutions are not called UHD though, so that sets them apart.

when can we use "turbo"?

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

QHD is technically 2560x1440p. Just call it 1440p and we are dunso.

Its because the standard for UHD as set by the ITU encompasses multiple resolutions and bit depths.

UHD can be Rec.2020 colour at multiple bit depths and frame rates. Right now there are no 100% Rec.2020 TVs or monitors, just some $100,000 laser projectors. Hence im waiting for an OLED or microLED emissive screen to get a new TV to replace my 2007 Sony Bravia HDTV, since its still got better colour than most WLED backlit TVs.
