Set up QoS on Asus router

JZStudios

I have an Asus RT-N66u I'm trying to "optimize" for my 5g wifi. I just got a new Asus AC56 card since I was getting spotty connection and frequent dropouts before.

Firstly, do I need QoS? Will it help with maintaining video/game playback?

How do I set it up to prioritize video streaming and games, then downloads, then everything else?

QoS is only really useful if you have multiple people/devices that are bandwidth heavy.

Even then, Open WRT is the only router OS I have found that can do proper bandwidth management/QoS as it has full traffic shaping support.

So I should just keep it turned off?

If you don't have leachers on your connection, its fine to leave it off.

I mean... I have an uncle who seems to be constantly streaming a few different things at once simultaneously. Internet radio, sports games, Netflix, etc...

I'm mostly trying to discern where the random lag, slowdowns, and disconnects are.

Turn it on, see if it helps.

It was off before, that's why I tried turning it on.

But I also have gotten a new Wifi card and updated the router drivers.

Routers don't have drivers, maybe you are referring to the firmware?

Also, on WiFi, the more devices connected to the same AP, the less bandwidth you have available to each device.

Getting a stable WiFi network up and running can be a trip to hell in many instances.  My WRT 1200AC for example, requires custom firmware with community tweaked drivers (custom Open WRT build) to keep the integrated WiFi adapters from crashing randomly.

To do debugging of a WiFi network you need at least a few WiFi adapters (or multiple WiFi enabled devices that can run a ping command) to verify problems.  To do it properly you need some kind of network analyzer.

Mmm. Well I'm using 5G now, and it should only be me, my uncles laptop, and a couple of phones.

Try using...

ping [router ip] -t

which will look something like

ping 192.168.0.1 -t

on your PC.

Let it run for a bit and see how consistent the time value is. (make sure all other devices are not using the network)

Leave it running and have your uncle start up his streams, see if it changes drastically.
