So you want <$700 with 2x8TB or 4x4TB. Aight.

I've never heard of Terramaster, so I'll recommend what I know is good from my experience: The Synology DS218 (not the + or j) is a great 2-bay NAS at $250 w/o disks. A decent 4-bay is its equivalent, the DS418, which is $350 w/o disks.

Disk wise, Ironwolf and WD Red are great in terms of power efficiency and noise, and they're not super expensive like the WD Gold, which is more of an enterprise disk than a NAS disk.

So basically you'd end up with the following:

2 bay:

1x DS218 - $250

2x 8TB WD Red - $570

or 2x Ironwolf 8TB - $505

---------------------------------

$820 / 755

4-bay:

1x DS418 - $350

4x4TB Red - $500

or 4x Ironwolf 4TB - $485

-------------------------

$850 / 835

Which is over budget, but you'll have a much better NAS overall I'd say. You could consider going with the DS218 and 6TB disks at first.
