How to choose which USB devices turn PC on.

benji_

(apologies if in wrong section, pls move if so)

How do I choose which USB devices turn my PC on? I enabled Resume From USB Device in the bios so my headset can charge while my computer is off, but I don't want the ability to turn my PC on from a mouse click or key stroke.

Any way I can select what turns on or not?

You shouldn't need to enable "resume from USB Device" to enable devices to charge when the machine is off - this is a standard feature provided by modern motherboards and the power supply's +5v standby rail.

But, yes, there should be an option to select/deselect individual devices in the bios (grouped into keyboards and mice), or alternatively if you run Windows, you can disable it on a per-device basis by right clicking it on Device Manager, select properties, then go to the "power management" tab and uncheck the box stating "allow this device to wake the computer".

Do that on any device you don't want to wake up the machine.

"allow this device to wake the computer" in the properties of things like your mouse and keyboard.

Also, off topic but what happened with your ram @benji_? I had a stick of my Vengeance LPX die and it was replaced under the corsair lifetime warranty.

my pc was bluescreening ever since i built it and i didnt really know why. all 16gb was showing up and i reseated all sticks so i didnt think it was ram.

when i got a dark rock pro 3 i had to chop the heat sinks off a couple sticks and one of the sticks died from doing that. i havent had any blue screens since then so it was fucked anyway

In that case, your pc is entering STR sleep (suspend), so Windows has no control over it. The bios option will prevent it, give me a moment and I'll take some screenshots of my bios to give you an example of what to look for.

Like I said though, device power delivery and sleep/wake triggers should be completely separate - you shouldn't need one to have the other.

hm ok, i have a msi z97 gaming 5 without the red usb 2 internal ports. my 3 internal port is bent so i have to use a 2 to 3 adaptor for the front ports. i have installed msi supercharger but ofcourse it doesnt do anything since i dont have the red ports. i did some googling and i had to enable the usb resume thing so there is always power and thats why ive got it on

Well, hopefully your board has similar options to mine. Be right back.

These are the options I get in my bios - power on by keyboard and power on by mouse control waking from suspend (despite the name, it doesn't turn the machine on when off), and "Power Loading" determines whether the machine should enable 5v charging from the standby rail of the PSU.

Do you have any similar options?

What are your options for "wake up event by"? Can you select "OS" for that?

That should allow Windows (and the changes you made earlier in device manager) to take precedence.

i changed the "wake up event by [BIOS]" to [OS] and unticked "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and it stopped the pc turning on from the keyboard and mouse but doesnt charge my headset. allowing the turn on from bios allowed the headset to charge but also allows the keyboard to turn the pc on. the reason this is a big issue is because my cat decides to sleep on my desk sometimes and i dont want him turning my pc in the middle of the night lol

That was pretty much my last idea here mate. I had a google around while you were away, and it looks like the only option on MSI boards is to use a specific internal header that's wired for 5vSB, or to keep the machine asleep instead of off...

Let me see if there's any Windows sleep settings that we can get to work to allow the USB ports to remain on when "wake up event by" is set to OS

If you set "wake up event by" to OS, and then make sure "USB Selective suspend is *off* in your power plan, does it make any difference? I noticed that, by default, Windows seems to have this set to enabled for all power plans, even High Performance.

Like below, but obviously for your plan if you don't use High Performance.

No worries, tag me or quote me so I get a notification when you've tested it. I'm still pretty much out of ideas (that was my last one), but I'd at least like to know if it works.
