Anyone fancy a 6 core, 128GB Ram** & 8TB NVME laptop? Dell thinks it's a great idea...

ItsMitch

S: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/07/04/dell_mobile_workstation_refresh/

Dell has just launched some new Laptop-... MOBILE WORKSTATIONS today and has revealed some bloody wild specifications, These laptops are aimed towards heavy workload applications, machine learning and other stuff.

The specs you may wonder?

The Precision 7530 & 7730 both can run a six core Xeon E 2176m at 2.70Ghz and ship with 64GB of DDR4 memory (The computers can handle 128GB if dell gets around to shipping 32GB Dimms)  and of course, it can handle 4 NVME slots for a total of 8TB of NVME storage capacity. The laptops do come at a rather crazy price tag although, the base model is priced at $1'199 and $1'479 respectively and that's without the big boy status addons. It'll be a really hard feet to get these laptops... workstations I mean under 3 grand for a fully decked out model.

2ce85cbf5c.png

This was the price of the Xeon e32176m, 64GB of DDR4, Quadro P4200 8GB and 8TB of NVME goodness

Want to order one of these monsters?

B'jesus!

First off, It's great to see dell add to its workstation lineup.  For a workstation laptop, $1,200 isn't really that bad - most of their other workstation laptops start in that range.

Secondly, I'm also happy to see this release; for it may cause a price drop in the other workstation laptops (which I've been eyeing for quite some time).

For 10k I would say nothing less than 1440p if we go with 1080p at least an ips panel.

8 TB NVMe is not needed in any way! Unless it costs the same as similar sized HDD. Otherwise 256-512 GB NVMe at max.

Computer users fall into two groups:
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

Not bad honestly for what you could pay for other laptops of similar price and still not get this spec.

"If I spend 10k on a laptop it better be weatherproof"

Is this supposed to be a Zbook 17 and Lenovo P71 competitor?

The Zbook 17 comes with the same screen for the base model screen. If you just need the horse power, there's no point in spending more for something you don't need. If you want or need the $600 screen, it's there. The more options given, the better.

Makes sense. I mean, the NVMe is kind of available on a ton of other laptops too if you're going to go about it that way. $8,000 of the cost is the drives alone (in Canada). There are loads of notebooks on the market today that can be configured to accept similar set ups 9_9

The video card is expensive...but really, if you priced it next to something like an ultra high end gaming machine, and then added 2TB NVME drives, your price likely wouldn't be that different.

Also, as a business product, prices are inflated.

Since when does a 6 core Xeon require a Win10 Pro for Workstation? Selecting non Xeon won't give that warning message. Win10 Pro for workstation is designed for 4 socket setup and has nothing to do with core count.

I certainly fly a lot more than the average Jeff, but I find it hard to accomodate my 15" MBP on a plane. I'd be hard pressed to use a 17" on one. At that point I don't see the portability aspect of a laptop at that size.

That could be one of the reasons. Tried one of their other Precision models and the only cpus they have were Xeons, but OS they let you select includes Win7 and Ubuntu. Selecting Win7 gives that same warning message and selecting Ubuntu gives a warning message says Office Productivity Software not supported.
