DRAM prices to rise slightly in 3Q18, NOOOOO!!!

GOD MAN
Quote

DRAM average selling prices (ASPs) will register a slight increase sequentially in the third quarter, and flat growth in the fourth, according to DRAMeXchange

Quote

As suppliers migrate to 1X or 1Y nm process one after another, the DRAM bit output increased by 3.2% in 2Q18 QoQ although some issues remain regarding the yield rate and product quality,"

"On the demand front, the market will witness steady stock up demand as the safety stock levels have not been reached, resulting in the marginal rise in DRAM ASP QoQ

Demand for servers and mobile devices will be driving the overall DRAM demand growth in the third quarter

I don't really care. Another few dollars isn't really that big of a deal to me.

How many people are building new PC's every year where this becomes a huge issue?

Ugh. I hate this PC hardware dogpile recently of 'but muh RAM prices' and 'but muh GPU prices.' Sure, they're both issues, but people who aren't informed shouldn't pretend to have an opinion on a topic just because it's popular.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

I have a hard time understanding what you are trying to say. I mean most people's opinion on it is that it sucks. You really don't need to be informed to know something is crappy. Also you state it like people who aren't informed on a topic aren't allowed to have an opinion. I mean everyone has the right to their opinion so I guess I will leave you to yours.

what? lots of people leave space for a RAM upgrade latter on, it's not just when you build a PC that you need RAM. And this prices are insane let alone even higher.

Well, at least SSD prices are going down.

I plan on buying new CPU/MoBo/RAM next year Q2/Q3 so I really dont care about RAM prices right now but I dont think that it will be any better next year. Probably even worse.

But I agree with OP. I see no reason for phones using 6+ GB of RAM.

Problem is that "another few dollers" keeps piling up on top of eachother for years without a stop.

Which is terrible news, even with all of the price fixing investigation it just keeps rising. It's just a couple dollars today, yet it will be 20 dollars two years later.

I have to agree its slowly creeped up over the past few years. Back when I was active here several years ago it was 30-40% cheaper, its a drastic increase so I hope something comes from that price fixing lawsuit because its honestly ridiculous

My thoughts? Their expecting fines to be coming in 2019 when they all get found to be colluding to fix prices together, a small price bump now probably nets them more profit over the next 12 months than their fine will be meaning everything they've made upto this point is pure bank.

I was quite confused when I read this but I guess the price fixing lawsuits are actually still underway and have not yet completed.  I'm sure once they do, prices will be back to normal.  Only a matter of how long that takes.  Odd that they'd push harder though... if a cop is trying to pull you over for speeding, it's usually not smart to speed up more.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Or, as more and more things use them and it becomes more of a broadly used commodity, it's something we'll have to come to terms with. When something is only used in a few products, it's not as valuable. If you look at the wide array of things that are now starting to use DRAM, it's not hard to understand that as demand grows, so to will the cost. There simply aren't enough companies that produce it, and building more factories is only one issue.

Two of my Corsair sticks chose a shitty time to die.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Hmm... Wut? Maybe in the US it is affordable, but everywhere else (and mostly on 3rd world countries) it is NOT cheap. I got a b350 mobo + r5 2600 +12Gb of ram and it cost me 2300 reais. That is +- two and a half minimum wages. The RAM was 780 reais, that is INSANE (minimum wage is 954).

"A few dollars" can be HUGE amounts of money.

Oh sure, inflation. Everything costs 3 cents more and RAM costs 1337 dollars more, but suuuuure its the inflation.

Minimum wage being what? An entire months pay? Week? Hour?

No offense, but if you're working a minimum wage job you probably shouldn't be buying higher end hardware. I mean yes, of course you can, but you'll obviously have to save to do it. Just like you would with any other hobby. I wouldn't be owning $8,000 mountain bikes on a minimum wage salary, but since I make more, I can get nicer stuff. Same with PCs.

Way to take that last point out of context ;) It was in relation to prices being higher in 20 years, not specific to RAM pricing.

Not in so many words, no, but they can instruct companies to cease anti-competitive practices. If a judge does that and production and price both stay flat across all three companies, additional fines, cease and desist orders and possible charges of content against company officers can follow.

you have to make a decision, either you don't care and just a few people buy it, or you actually care and it's a big deal because a "wide array of things" uses it.
