980 ti vs 1070 (Both Used)?

Go to solution Solved by orbitalbuzzsaw,

I'd take the 980 Ti because the 1070 is a mini card = awful cooling

I am thinking of selling my gtx 970 I got in december for $120 for around $150-$200. When I do that I want to upgrade to either a 980 ti or a 1070. I have heard that one is not necessarily better than the other so I want your guys opinion. I will attach a pic with the used gpus on ebay. The 1070 is mini so I guess that means worse oc potential? Idk. They both have $10 shipping so it kinda cancels out but just keep that in mind that the prices are +10. Also, disregard the middle one. I was just checking on how much the 970 was worth.

Even good models of 980Ti are QUITE hotter than GTX1070 good models.

But bad examples of coolers exist for both GPU's.

Something to consider...

Do you prefer 65-75*c or 70-80*c for similar performance.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

So are you saying that I should get the 1070? If it is similar performance and the 1070 is a mini than maybe I should get the 980 ti because it's cheaper by like $20.

I'd take the Zotac 1070 mini and forget overclocking. 1070 itself is a far more efficient GPU, and it's not that hot of a card after undervolting.

Get the Ti.

That is the Superposition score sheet from the pinned thread in the section. There are 980 ti's that are reaching 1070 ti scores so it seems plausible that you may get more performance from that 980 ti than you can from the 1070. You'll just have to deal with the heat and fan noise, but I would make that trade-off myself.

The GTX1070 is my bet.

Even if a Mini version,... full set of cores,..good boost clocks....It will STILL boost high between 1650-1800Mhz is likely, and performance is there.

Set a Temp Target if its too hot from the default temps.

The 980Ti is likely going to be hot as well, maybe not as hot, but close, just like its performance,...

Technologies at play..... Better Shadowplay, Better Memory Compression, Better VR & power efficiency across the board....to name a few.

Is it worth it to get a normal 2 fan 1070 for only like $5 more shipping rather than the ti?

Yes

I'd go 1070 for a very big drop in power consumption, can be undervolted and be even more efficient at stock clocks very easily. It has better VR support and more VRAM. Just note the Armor is a POS cooler

I don't think you should get the 1070 -- I think you should get the 980 ti.

But if you're leaning toward the 1070 then spend the extra $5 for better cooling.

The 980 Ti is over all better, it just consumes more power and runs a bit hotter but the aftermarket cooler being appropriated nothing to worry about.

Maxwell have full driver support.

I found a new deal, on craigslist and not ebay, that is now $300 for a 980 ti but it has a water cooler. Now do you think I should get that or not?

I personally would not go for used watercooled card.

I wouldn't bother when a 1070 is the same cost or you can get a good 980ti for cheaper.
