My Laptop.. Is it worth it tho..

Hey,

So, I have also been looking for A school laptop for awhile now,

What I do in school is business analytics, Big excel files SAC Programming. Notes, Word, etc.

But Ive been debating on if I should go with a thin and light Laptop, (Ive had bad exercises in the past with overheating, loud fans ETC.)

Or if I should go with a Laptop with a GPU in it, Most of the laptops nowadays, or at least in Canada are near the same price, With or without a GPU if you want a 8th Gen CPU...

So if im speeding $1,300, Might not be alot to some people, But if I spend that, I might as well go for the laptop with the Better CPU and better GPU then the more Business line laptops.. Right?

My Needs:

Spoiler

Location: Canada

Budget: 1,300 Before Taxes.

CPU: i7+
GPU: What ever, Id like to do some side gaming maybe. (1050ti at most)
Requirments:

Below 6 Pounds.

Light Gaming.

4+ Battery hours

Would like it to last me awhile.

I was looking at the Gaming laptops, The Dell G5s, they have everything I need / want in them, i7 8th Gen, 1050ti, , HDD and SSD.. But they still have the small "Gammer look" to them that I really wasnt a fan of "Red and Black" or "blue and black"

And then I found this laptop, the bran New.

The Lenovo Legion Y530,

And I actually fell in love.

~ Fully Black Look.

~ No Crazy Gammer logos

~No Crazy Stock Red keyboard, A smiple White Backlight.

~ Really Nice Dispaly over the Dell.

~ Thin Screen.

~ Really nice Cooling. (So it looks, on paper)

~ Better Battery Life.

i7 8750

1050ti

1tb HDD Upgrable

8gb DDR4 2666 Upgradable.

Spoiler

... But then I question, is it really worth Spending $1,500 (after taxes)? I take care of my stuff, (Cleaning my PC once a week) I just need to knwo if anyone thinks this laptop is going to last awhile.. like awhile.

I could probably get away with buying some shit $600 laptop, Or even use my REALLY old laptop in school, and get by.

But im trying to justify spending $1,500, and If i Do buy it not being depressed that i spend more on a Laptop then I did on my PC...

Well, im done crying about my life story,

Tell me ur thoughts :)

I think the Legion is the best bet. Their highlighted model for $1,000 only has an i5 though, not an i7...the i7 model is $1,700?

Definitely get something new.

Are you buying now, or before school starts in the fall? My aunt got me to help her buy a laptop for my cousin, and Lenovo had some killer sales towards the end of the summer. The T series was heavily discounted, and even the P series saw serious discounts to the point it competed with the T series.

Have you looked into importing something from the US? You can often save a ton of money that way, especially if you start looking at NOS or something similar.

If you need the power, go for it.

If you don't, then I personally wouldn't?

Here's why wouldn't:

Imagine a part in your PC failing or .. you drop your phone or some other unexpected expense comes along & shows its ugly head, having that extra cash to the side will allow a worthy replacement not some janky/half-baked solution you might regret for the next 2-3 years.

If you feel like you need this or deserved it, hell who are we to judge?

For all we know you or your parents/caretakers make so much money that $ 1.500 means jack all to you - not saying that is the case .. but keep in mind you are on a forum and not asking a relative/close friend for advise.

When the PC is acting up haunted,

who ya gonna call?

Hello :)

So, I dont Need the power, the school Suggests an i5 is the minimum, I know people in my class, that had an i5 and it was horribly slow.. I also had the HP Envy with a i5, and the Fans on that thing + the heat, was crazy... So I have pretty much been scared off from an i7. And with the i7 8th Gen being the newest chips, I feel like they are going to last longer and take longer to become outdated,

Also, It comes with a 2 year warnrty, Plus I am going to upgrade to the 3 year, I have done that with most of my items, Never had a issue of something breaking but I like to be safe then sorry if anything does happen so yea.  and It mosly Everything besides the CPU/GPU is upgradeble or changeable

For the last thing, I dont mean to get to personal But, I moved  to Canada from Australia when I was 18, Now being 21, Have not ever seen any of my family from that time, Due to fighting, school, etc, And Yes I know this is a Forum, I dont really care I legit have 0 Friends or Family I can contact "in real life"  So I use this to ask questions or help.

Like you said, I dont want something that is going to die after a couple of years, So I would lean towards the 3 year Part / Service Warranty.

Ahhh gotcha. The upgrades for the T series are so, so much more. That's a pretty solid deal then.

When upgrading with Lenovo, I'd avoid their offerings. You can usually get much cheaper parts elsewhere and just install them yourself, at least as far as memory goes.

.....1st of July. We're Canadian, not American :P

Also, the P52s is $1,400, and when I saw it, it was $600 off, not $150. Before school sales are a lot better.

Like you said, I dont want something that is going to die after a couple of years, So I would lean towards the 3 year Part / Service Warranty.

Extended Warranty is what I'd advise if you want a machine for 3+ years. Do read the terms on what they replace on the third year, can actually differ.

Lets just say if you want to keep it for three years and use it heavily as daily machine I wish you good luck, bought several laptops myself over the years none lasting more then 2 years. This however is personal experience, I'm probably a laptops worst nightmare so your mileage may vary.

Sorry to hear you don't hear from your family or old friends.

If I knew you where in this situation I would've phrased it differently.

On-Topic TL;DRish:

Personally I'd get the Lenovo Y530 with extended warrant + accidental damage service.

Lenovo makes some great laptops, those lasted me the longest so far.

If something feels of day 1, instantly send a support request & do not hesitate to RMA!

Having learned this the hard way myself I use this simple phrase "Something wrong with a new machine? Do not wait, just email - package & RMA."

See Louis Rossman's video on how he got treated by Lenovo's Support, only company every doing that do me funnily enough was Apple.

Hopefully this can help you further along & maybe even pull the trigger on a machine ;)

I live in canada. CAD sucks.

What I've been doing since the beginning of time is buying second-hand laptops with warranty

1) Buy it

2) RMA it

3) RMA it until they give you a replacement

4) Get a new laptop at a fraction of the cost

Just did it with a fully specced out XPS13 1tb ssd 4k rose gold. Retails for like 3k, got it for 1900. Complained to dell and had 3 onsite visits that they said fuck it and sent me a new one.
