Dual GPUs not in SLI -- Any real benefit for gaming?

I have an extra Nvidia 1070 that I haven't sold yet and I wanna make use of it while I still have it. I've read that installing a second card for rendering can be useful, but I was wondering if it would benefit gaming at all. So my question is whether I can install the extra 1070 and use it to connect to my display and then have games run off of my 1070 ti. Also, if I do how can I assign the game to run off the 1070 ti to be displayed through the 1070? If that is possible at all.

Of if anyone knows of a way to run different card types in SLI successfully then that would be awesome.

And I bought the 1070 ti with the intention of selling the 1070 so the resulting "cost" of the 1070 ti would be minimal. So selling both to buy a 1080 ti isn't a real solution to me. It would be fun, but I'd rather eventually get the money out of the extra 1070.

I will continue to Google the question I've posed here, but I am hoping someone with experience will to chime-in in the meantime.

its possible to run 2 different gpus at the same time
(say for VMs or whatever)
Im pretty sure you could just plug in both, hook up the monitor to one of them (I doubt that you can do with both) and go forward.

I don't think its possible to use both gpu in games like you described (and I don'T see why you would bother in the first place)
BUT
you can dedicate PhisX to one or the other (tho im not sure how it works with different gpus, it may not be an option)

Just plug them in and see ! since you have them already, why not ?

The "why sentiment" is exactly what I was thinking. The spare 1070 has just been sitting there so I figured it I would find something to use it for before I sell it.

You cannot run different cards in SLi, but you can use it for mining, running a separate game on another monitor by setting the monitor connected to the GTX 1070 as default and launching a game then setting the monitor connect to the GTX 1070Ti as default (something for fun to do), or use it for Physx, like givingtnt said. There's really nothing else to do with it.

So if I am running a single monitor is it not possible to use the 1070 to display and then use the 1070 ti to handle the game? I have both installed now and it seems that games are running off the 1070 only. Also,  EVGA PrecisionX shows the 1070 ti running at extremely slow speeds. Bascially as if it isn't being utilized for anything.

Since they both use the GP104 GPU, it might be possible to run them in SLI using Different SLI Auto.

Aside from that, there is no benefit to having the 1070 plugged in.

Awesome thanks for that. It didn't come up in the searches I did.

I kinda forgot I had another system with a 1070 in it so when I remembered I pulled it and installed it and the other 1070 in SLI in my current system. I wasn't impressed. Mostly because there weren't many things I have installed that actually utilize SLI. CS:GO saw no improvement. Unigine Superposition saw no improvement. Metro Last Light saw no improvement? (this one I am not sure about because I don't know how it performs with a single 1070 and I couldn't remember how it performs with my 1070 ti)? 3DMark Fire Strike is 4000 points higher than a single 1070 ti so that wasn't thrilling.

With that said -- I am not sure using modded drivers is gonna be worth it for me to see my 1070 ti perform like a 1070 while in SLI.
