Is this a bad idea?

Need a powerful home diy NAS in RAID 5. Will this work?

Thanks for the tips guys. Going to use FreeNAS and ZFS. Will upgrade the RAM and CPU.

I seriously doubt the need for 16Gb of memory.

Other than that, I would replace the PSU with a CX450M.

In case you need an OS, I've heard really good things about FreeNAS.

Why datacentre drives? Go for WD Red or Seagate's NAS drives.

You'd likely want a more powerful CPU for that amount of storage and 10Gbps. What OS are you going with? Are you planning on installing it on the SSD?

When spending this much, I'd advise going for server components that support helpful technologies like ECC RAM.

Depends what file system it uses really. If it's ZFS, 16GB isn't close to what devs would recommend for that amount of storage.

FreeNAS would recommend way more than 16GB for this system BTW.

That's only if you use online-deduplication, though. If you don't use that, then you also don't need that much RAM, either.

You could save a bit as well with a smaller board, But I guess you still need your RAID controller.
