Old system new GPU or New system??

Quadro2k

Hello Linustechtip’s community

I would greatly appreciate any advice with my dilemma. I currently have a four year old system, specs below.

CPU:              i7 4790K

Motherboard: Z97 GAMING 9 AC (MS-7926)

RAM:             Corsair Vengence 16GB 1600 MHZ (Edited)

GPU:             GTX 980TI

Storage:         SSD & Seagate

PSU:              Corsair AX760

Considering its age, I think it has done very well but I’d like to go into the realms of 1440p gaming. I’ve ordered myself a credit card and I’m prepared to spend £700 on a GTX 1080TI however, would I be doing myself out of a favor? I ask because I could buy myself a whole new system (motherboard, i5 8400, ddr 4) using the existing PSU, ATX tower and hard drive for about £500-£600 to later buy a moderate GPU.

If I’m honest, I’m not completely sure if my current PSU (although reliable) has the right parts to support the new system either or whether my current system isn't half bad and doesn't really require an overhaul. I’d like to enjoy my favorite game Squad a little bit more. Really appreciate anyone kind enough to spend time to help me out.

Many Thanks

Quadro

The only thing I would do with your system is try overclocking your memory. 1333Mhz is pretty slow.

Sorry my mistake it's 1600Mhz memory. Thanks so far guys, although I'm still not sure what is the answer. I'm not sure what "go big or go home" means, many people buy moderate gaming machines. You don't always have to go big, especially when you have a mortgage and medical bills to pay :)

Why would you upgrade? That's still a sweet gaming PC! I'd say go big or go home if you're going to upgrade. Build a new system and build the world's most overkill pfSense router or something

Only $3687.31? Wow that's only £2791.51 to me! Hell I order it right now after I re-mortgage my home! hahaha 9_9

I guess what you're saying seriously though is perhaps a graphics will be enough to keep the old girl running?

You don't really need to upgrade anything. As it is the 980ti performs very similar to the GTX 1070, and the 4790K is still excellent for gaming, even without an overclock.

Ok I think I've come to a decision. I haven't overclocked the CPU yet so I'm going to do that and buy myself a decent GPU. RAM is already the best I can get for DDR3 pretty much. Unless anyone else has a difference in opinion I'd like to say thank you for your time, I'll be sure to hang around and be part of the community. Cheers!

what are you talking about? I'm still rocking games with ivy bridge. I just use my PC for gaming and office work, so I don't see my PC now can't fulfill my need.

That's still a very powerful gaming PC.  Unless you want to game at 4K or 1440@144Hz, that is more than powerful enough.

Since the CPU isn't OC'ed, buy a better cooler and try to OC it.  Also try OC'ing the video card if you have not yet.

dude the 980ti is more than enough for 1440p gaming. I would get something like a 8600k a b360 mobo and 16gb of ram and keep the gpu, storage, psu, and case

You had the 4790K for 4 years and you have yet to overclock it? That CPU was made for OCing.

Throw a dual-tower air cooler or a closed loop water cooler on it ASAP like the Scythe FUMA or Corsair H100i. You'll easily get 4.5GHz with a moderate voltage increase.

Anyways, I think you are overestimating how taxing 1440p could be. There's no practical reason to dish out money for a 1080 Ti because of two reasons:

1) A 980 Ti is equivalent to the 1070 in performance, which is more than enough for 1440p @ 60fps on many AAA titles on high settings.

2) The next-gen 11/20 series GPUs are right around the corner. Why buy a 1080 Ti when you can just buy a 11/2080 in a few months?

Rumors say the 11/2080 will also perform better than the 1080 Ti (https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/06/26/nvidia-turing-ampere-graphics-cards-release-date-price-specs/)

I get 4.5 GHz @ 1.2v with my 4790K under a BeQuiet Pure Rock. You don't need cooling that good for a 4790K (BTW-these are temps when compressing files for hours on end)

I'd say the best bet is to get a B350 mobo, a 6 core Ryzen Cpu (ryzen 5 1600 maybe), and upgrade to ddr4 ram. That will cost between 420-500$ or maybe less if u can get a good deal. That's a reasonable upgrade. So your PC doesn't only be gaming oriented but if u want that then that's a different story. And yeah i dont really get why would u wanna upgrade a gtx 980Ti

Your setup is fine for 1440 60hz gaming. I had no problems using a 17 2600k at that resolution.

GTX 980 ti = GTX 1070.

If you want 3440X1440 WS 60hz go GTX 1080.

If you want 1440 144hz gaming, go GTX 1080 ti.

If you want 4k 60hz go GTX 1080 ti.

A new 6 core will smooth some games out & lows in games will be less severe.

I use a i7 8086 CPU with a GTX 1080 ti for 4k 60hz gaming. The i7 8086k is for my modded games. It adds 3 to 5fps over my 17 8700k that I use in my wide screen rig.

are you people joking

seriously what is even going on here

a 980ti should have no problems with 1440p gaming, I do most of my gaming on an i5 4570 and GTX 970 in 1440p at general high settings to get a stable 60fps, GTA V, TW3, esports stuff, Skylines, FO4, whatever

Wow. Cheers for such a good response and a wealthy mix of opinions. It's interesting what people have to say about the 980ti, I didn't realise!

I never overclocked my CPU because I never had to! What will surprise you even further is I have a i100 water cooler. I don't suppose anyone has a quality OC guide using XTU at hand? I'll just google it but doesn't hurt to ask.

I think I will hold off on the GPU front. My PC really doesn't have a problem with AAA games (struggles with Warhammer II: Total War) but I play a lot of Squad and unfortunately it's poorly optimised. You really need a beast of a computer to enjoy it. I guess patience is a virtue and I'll get myself a 1180 or order myself a EVGA 1080ti with the 90 day upgrade thingy.

Well I overclocked my 4790K and managed to get 4.8ghz @ 1.285v running at about 70c no higher than 75c. I'm quite pleased with that.
