I have some questions about ram sticks, please help!

Hello, i'll start this off by saying, i think that 16gb of ram is expensive, but 8 might not be enough, is it? (i'm a casual gamer). So i was thinking to buy 3 4GB sticks, i'd have to have a motherboard with 4 ram channels(sorry for sounding like a peasant, first time building a pc).

So my question is: Can i use 3 ram sticks for a 4 channel motherboard? Or are there 3channel motherboards?

Sidequestion: Is 12GB overdoing it?

Thanks for your help!

Just buy a single 8gb stick and use it, if you feel it isn't enough buy another stick later when you have the means to.

For light gaming 8 should be fine. You can use 3 out of 4 memory slots on a PC, but (AFAIK) you won't be able to use dual channel memory then. This means that 2x4 would be twice as fast as 3x4. If you mention which games you want to play at what resolution and settings I think people with way more knowledge about the requirements can tell you whether 8 will suffice.

@martward I play a variety of games, league of legends, battlefield 1, but i'd also like to play new games such as cyberpunk 2077 and others. Also i was thinking 144hz 1440p

@Princess Cadence Is it possible to use an 8gb with a 4gb?

Yes it is possible the only negative effect is that your dual channel only works up to 8gb (4+4) the last 4gb will run as single channel but dual channel/single channel is one of the most meaningless things when comes down to gaming, getting a high frequency and low latency stick still makes far more difference.

You want to play Triple A games at 2560x1440p144hz and you can't even afford the proper 16gb kit? I mean you should really rethink this through as you're off to a bad start

3x4GB sticks will probably cost about $150 ($50 each).
2x8GB sticks will cost about $160-$170.

You won't be saving much money.

Go with a 2x8GB kit.
Something like this

What is your budget? Is the build complete? Do you need monitors and other peripherals included in the budget?

As @Princess Cadence mentioned you might have to rethink the build if you are thinking of 1440p 144hz and questioning 16GB of RAM

@GoldenLagMy budget is tops 1552, since tech prices in Denmark is a lot higher than America and other countries. No my build isn't completed

Give me a min. Ill slot together something. 1552 is that a direct convertion? If you are using danish prices dividing the danish kroner by 10 gives a more accurate estimate.

Also did you need a monitor and other peripherals and OS included in that price?

@GoldenLagNo that's the pc alone, and in DKK my budget is 10.000-10.500 and i'm using a currency-thingy that converts the currencies

@Bossen Corsair VS450 isn't a very good PSU. It's also not modular so you can't use those sleeved cables you've selected.
Don't buy the sleeved cables, and instead use that money towards buying a better quality PSU.

You also have an AMD CPU selected paired with an Intel 1151 socket motherboard. They're not compatible.

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

Wrong mobo. Swap it for a B350 mobo. Preferably the Pro4 from ASrock or this https://www.proshop.dk/Bundkort/ASRock-X470-Master-SLI-Bundkort-AMD-X470-AMD-AM4-socket-DDR4-RAM-ATX-/2653965

The B350 might require a Bios update.

Get a 1070ti since it is more performance for the money

Get the crucial mx500 250GB SSD instead. It is much better.

Get this PSU instead: https://www.proshop.dk/Stroemforsyning/Seasonic-Focus-Plus-550-Gold-Stroemforsyning-550-Watt-120-mm-80-Plus-Gold-certified/2614540

2600x comes with a adjecuate cooler, no need to pick up a watercooler nor reasom to pick up cables, they come with the PSU.
