Only single channel ram

lol no. H310 boards support dual channel just fine.

Thanks for the help. So will I not be able to add another memory stick later on to make it like 16gb?

I mean there are two slots it it?

you can add in more ram as long as there's stil one slot left. otherwise you'l need to swap it out for a larger capacity stick.

Hello everyone,

I was going to build a pc with this processor motherboard combination:-

Intel core i3 8100 and msi b360 motherboard

But then I thought about buying an i5 instead but I was still tight on budget so I changed it to this:-

Intel core i5 8400 and gigabyte h310m-h motherboard

The h310-m was a lot more cheaper than the b360 which enabled me to upgrade to an i5 8400 but what was the difference between those two?

Will I face any problems due to this decision or it was just some other factor which affected the price. Feel free to give any suggestion and a thanks in advance from me.

If that affects my performance(say fps or export time), then is it even worth to use the new configuration rather than the old one?

Less PCIe lanes compared to the b630, Only single channel ram with 2 slots instead of 4 slots (2x dual channel on b360) No usb 3.2 gen 2 ports, 2 less sata ports and some other stuff let me find you a pic for that

Here you can see the difference between the two mobos. The H310 might not look as fancy as the B360 which also reduces the price.

I also bought a H mainboard at that time because I had little money and that with a 4670K. worked great. But I have now switched to a Z because of overclocking. Disadvantage at that time was that the H mainboard had only 2 ram sockets.

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X

Motherboard: MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX

RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4-3200 DIMM CL16

GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 3070 VENTUS 2X OC

Cooling: CORSAIR H100i v2

VR: Oculus Rift CV1

Keyboard: Logitech G810 Orion Spectrum

Mouse: Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum

Sound: Logitech G433 Camouflag

Honestly I would reccomend everyone to get a dual channel Mobo, you get so much more out of it instead of having only single channel ports

Okay but will any of these things affect the performance? If yes, how much?

Mh let me say it like this, from experience I had about 10% more FPS in games between single channel (h310) and dual channel (b360) memory, dual channel beeing the one with more fps, though this can change from game to game

So is it worth to upgrade from the old configuration?

Will it affect the performance more than an i3 8100 will?

the 8400 will perform I would say 25-30% better than the 8100 though that's just a raw estimation, there are many other factors such as cooling, especially your gpu (bottleneck is sadly a thing)

Maybe there is someone could make a better esimation for

  • i5 8400 paired with H310 and 16 gigs single channel
  • i3 8100 paired with B360 with 2x8 gigs dual channel

GPU is 1060 3gb, and ram is 8gb ddr4 2400 MHz, and I will use the stock cooler and an hdd.

So will you tell me basically which one is a better option?

you just lose some features going with a H310 board instead of a B360 board, there's no performance difference if the rest of the hardware is the same.

yep go for 8400, you have only a single ram stick from what I've read so you wont need the dual channel memory.

Take the i5 8400 with the H310

you can add in more ram as long as there's stil one slot left. otherwise you'l need to swap it out for a larger capacity stick.
