Working at an AT&T Store, what's that like?

handymanshandle

So, 7 months ago I quit my job working at a local grocery store chain that I had been at for a year, first job lasted 2 months at McDonalds, left it for my job at that grocery store.
I've been spending these past 7 months working on myself and finishing school, I ended taking a few months off mid Junior year last year because of shit really setting me back.

But I saw a job opening for an AT&T store near me a few weeks ago and started applying but my timeline for everything was way off as usual so I missed the time frame on the job opening I saw, so I'm hoping there's another one hiring or that same store hasn't filled the position...

However, I wonder if there's anyone that has worked or currently works for AT&T or really any carrier like Verizon or Sprint or T-Mobile and what your experience was like working there.

What's management like at the store, can it get busy and how are the customers?
I imagine like in grocery you can get irate customers but how often did you get those types of customers?

I know it's commission so if I can sell more I can make more, but on average how much do you make? Also guessing like with grocery, the holidays are the busy time for those stores?

My mom currently is on Verizon and so that's what I have but I wouldn't mind either paying my S8+ off and getting service through either AT&T or if I worked for a different carrier or my mom even offered to keep my S8+, pay it off and give it to someone...

I would probably get an iPhone 8+ or considering how close the next iPhones will be released maybe just stick with my S8+ until the new iPhones were out.

I know it's commission

i hate the US for this kind of thing.....

if you're serious about it, you're better off to ask the store you want to apply at what the pay is like and what kind of work is to be expected as it can change based on state. It also shows you have initiative and are serious about working there instead of just "eh, i guess i'll apply"

Yeah, on the site it said the pay ranges from $35,000-$56,000 depending on how much you sold.

The inherent problem with commission based sales is that it incentivizes you to upsell the customer to the most expensive thing(s) that you can possibly sell them... Even if that's not what they need or ultimately want.

It doesn't provide a situation that encourages fair and good customer service.

Been in the AT&T store a few times and what I see the employees have to do is help customers with technical stuffs, sell products like phones, setup data plans, or help with paying their bills. They have kiosk now, so customers can do it themselves if they want to. As for a store or any store, some days it can get really busy, others times it's quiet. So don't worry about how busy it's going to get. Customers is what brings in business and for you to have a job and a pay check. Why not visit that store one day and just browse their products, while observing what the employees are doing to get a better picture.

the salespeople at my local microcenter doesnt do that though. they are actually very good at recommending the best bang for the bucks products and services.

That's great. However, that means those employees are going above and beyond, and are truly exceptional.

But many companies with Commission based pay will have the managers pressure the employees into "upsell upsell upsell" mindset.

Not every company does that, but it's the inherent downside to commission based sales. With non-commission based sales, the Employee makes the same regardless of what he sells you, and therefore is not incentivized to simply sell you the most expensive thing he can get away with.

The idea is that it takes the pressure off, and allows him to sell the customer the ideal package of goods, rather than what simply makes the company the most money (or the employee the most commission).
