AT2020 Stream Mic: KEYBOARD NOISE!!

FUR1AN

Hey all,

I have been trying to adjust my noise gate and compression settings to filter out keyboard noise while streaming in OBS Streamlabs but no matter what I try it isn't working...

The mic is faced towards me, away from keyboard. But the mic is on an arm approx. 12" above the keyboard (Corsair K70 Rapidfire w/ MX Cherry Speed Switches). Does anyone have settings that will effectively knock out keyboard noise?

Thanks for any help, I have tried youtube troubleshooting but can't seem to get it.

General nerd and I work in corporate finance. Happy to help!

You will need to adjust the "Open Threshold" in the noise gate in OBS. Keep increasing it (moving the slider left) until you find a point where the keyboard noise is not triggering the microphone but your voice still is. You will need to keep an eye on the mic bars in OBS to see what is triggering it and what isn't.

Make sure your mic is positioned correctly to pick up your voice and only your voice. Use the polar pattern to determine where it should be facing and positioned.

Consider repositioning the mic so it is off to the side rather than directly above the keyboard.

Also make sure it is mounted to a shock mount, and if possible not mounted to the same desk the keyboard is on to avoid picking up the vibrations through the desk and stand as you type.

Thanks so much, I’ll give that a try tomorrow and see if that works. I do have a shock mount as well that I am using, but the boom arm will need to be mounted to the same desk.

A gate isn't really going to help here. Once your voice opens the gate then the keyboard is going to be heard.

Isolating the stand as much as possible will reduce any vibration to the mic (low frequency rumble). If you have a very clickey keyboard then use the polar pattern of the mic to position it, you and the keyboard to maximise it's pickup of your voice and minimise the pickup of the keyboard.

Other than buying silent switches, something I think everyone should own because imo loud keyboard clicks are a thing of the past that died with razers "memchanical" switches what would help for a cheap $5 is install o-rings this helped imemsly with my silent speed switches during normal, non-intense gameplay I have almost zero sound coming from my keyboard. The shorter travel distance does take some time to get used to and you could even double up the o-rings on most pressed keys such as WASD, shift and spacebar. Hope it helps.
