YouTube Video Quality Across Platforms

Ryujin2003

I try to save on my data consumption by forcing YouTube to 144p on my smartphone. However, when I come home and watch something on my laptop or desktop, it appears that my preference of 144p isn't locked to the device but is instead used as a setting for my user account. Does anyone else experience this? Am I doing something wrong? And is there a way around this weird issue?

And it's an issue because if I switch it to 1080 on one of my PCs, then when I'm out using my smart phone, sometimes I forget to manually switch it back and realize I've been watching stuff on my data at 1080p for half an hour.

Why would you want to watch videos in 144p? It looks horrible.

One way to save on your data is to go to youtube app settings, switch the "allow hd video on mobile data" to off, that limits the videos to 480p, which is still watchable, but saves on a ton of data compared to full hd.

I listen to JayzTwoCents, LTT, HWC, GN, etc.. while I drive, so I don't really need the image since I'm just listening. And since the majority of these don't come with PODCASTS (except WAN show I presume still does), I just crank down the video quality so it doesn't burn my data. I might take a look at that app setting. I mean, I have a good amount of data each month, but sometimes I go through it super fast because I'll forget about the 1080p setting being on the phone. Again, I'm not watching it, so I don't notice the video quality.

If you listen why not listen through google music / apple music / spotify ?

No youtube adds and uses less battery, as the screen is off.

I listen to music and stuff at work, but I find that I'm generally too busy to be able to allocate the time I used to spend watching some of these channels, so I like to listen to some of their content while I drive. I could stream music, no problem. I use Amazon Music for that. Does Google Music allow me to listen to the audio track of YouTube videos without actually doing the videos?

No idea, google did a complete rehaul of their service, now it is somehow connected to youtube etc. But it is a paid subscription.

I believe that's intentional. Usually it locks to auto for my session on YouTube (or 360p on mobile), but on my desktop it'll lock onto whatever I had it set to last time manually. Usually it's 1440p.
