I've tried everything...I'm done...

Zandvliet

Hi all,

So this post is more of a vent for myself than a call for help, but who knows...

I've bought the Asus Strix Z270G with the 7700k back in January 2017. Basically started having problems from the beginning. My pc wouldn't boot, not a light lit up. At first I though it was a shortage between MB and case (because it worked outside the case) or the RAM sticks (but all RAm sticks worked and all DIMM slots worked). However, putting everything in the case again and nothing worked anymore. Redid the whole thing again and again. e.g. it worked outside the case but not inside. So I sent the MB with CPU back to the supplier for testing, unfortuantly they couldn't find anything work with it. So I put everything back together again but still no boot. Then after the xth time it worked, the pc booted and everything seemed to work fine. Note that my pc is water cooled so you can imagine it was a pain in the ass to do this a couple of times.

Then after a couple months my pc didn't boot again. So I took everything apart again, refilled the loop and cleaned everything. Placed it back into the case and again... no boot. This time when testing the DIMM slots it turned out one of the DIMM slots didn't work anymore so I sent the MB back to the supplier. However... they couldn't find a problem and I got my MB back without any change. But who would have guessed... when I tried the DIMM slots again they all worked.

So I placed everything back in the case and.... no boot.... Again after several attempts the pc worked again without accutally having done anything except to resitting the components.

This painfull experience repeated itself 2-3 more times before arriving to today. This weekend I decided to clean the loop again after 5 months of no problems. But, of course, the pc doesn't boot again... So now I am at the point where I'm debatting whether to throw away the MB and put my ASUS B150I with a i5 6500 into my main pc and sell the 7700k, in order to wait until the next gen of CPUs and MBs are for sale. Or, to buy a new CPU with MB right now.

The thing is.. I could try my current MB and CPU again outside the case, but I'm 90% sure that it will boot with no problems. Which means, knowing myself, I'll try to get the system working again. Although I'm really done with this MB. Another option would be to get new Z270G... but I do not know anymore...

To summarize a couple of fixes I've tried:

  • Use other PSU
  • Use other CPU / MB in case
  • Air cooled / vs water cooled
  • Other RAM sticks
  • Inside / outside case
  • No GPU
  • BIOS updates (when available)
  • CMOS

Like I said at the beginning of the post, I'm not really looking for solutions anymore as I've given up on those. What I would like to hear is what you guys recommend I do. New CPU and MB or use my ASUS B150I with a i5 6500 for now.

I'm leaning towards the latter.

Cheers.

It could be weird shorting out due to not using all the correct standoffs? You even said it worked fine outside of the case. I guess it could somehow be the case too, but unlikely.

as others have said already, it's probably the case cuasing some kind of shortage.

If you are however going to use your old mobo and it seems to work, update the bios so you can put your i7 in it, for more performance, you could then still sell the z270 mobo and i5-6500 together

I cannot send it back anymore as I've drilled holes into it.

yeah that's also an option.

I've thought of that, I forgot to mention that I've used several types of standoffs and also placed electrical tape between the MB and standoffs.

Also, I've never had the problem with my ASUS B150I with a i5 6500 in that case.

I know this might seem straightforward enough, but when in the case, did you have only the minimum needed to POST plugged in? So no Power SW, RST SW, HDD LED, USB Headers, etc?
