Which one should i buy? RX 580 or GTX 1060 6gb?

I want to upgrade my decent but dated AMD R9 280 graphics card, but i don't really know what i should upgrade to. I mainly use my pc for gaming and i would like a graphics card that would perform well on a 144Hz refresh rate at 1080p. I would like to know wich graphics card to buy, between the RX 580 or the GTX 1060( 6gb version ).

They would be running on a AMD a10-6800k processor. Also would they botttleneck in my current setup?

Specs:

AMD a10-6800k

MSI A88XM Gaming Mobo

G. Skill Ares 1600 Hz 8gb ram

EVGA 600 watts power supply

MSI R9 280 Gaming 3gb

the CPU would bottleneck your setup.  If you want to play at 144Hz you'll need a much better CPU like an i7-8700K and a suitable graphics card.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Upgrade your cpu first. It is a very weak and old processor. Save up for a new build, because what you currently have won't benefit from a new GPU.

Rubbish! AMD A10 6800k is an awesome cpu. It's just that it will take some more time for games to become optimized for it.

Well not really. It is even slower than a cheap Pentium G4560. This is an old Processor that should be replaced if OP wants to make use of a new GPU. Definitely not a 8700K but a i3 8100 or R3 1200 should be fast enough for a RX580/GTX 1060.

Nope! It has FOUR REAL cores and that cheap Pentium has just TWO

I don't think so. It's got a really weak IPC and it's effectively a dual core with SMT since the 4 "cores" only have 2 ALUs between them.

You could make the argument that the FX-8350 and similar older FX 8 core CPUs are getting optimized with newer games but the older generation AMD APUs are just too old and too inadequate in 2018.

Yup, something like an i3-8100 or R3-1200 or even an R3-2200G would be a noticeable boost to performance.

Well those "real cores" are an outdated architecture with low ipc. So again, it really is a slow cpu. It was ok a couple of year ago.

Change GPU to RX 580 8GB. Your cpu is awesome. Keep it. Good for next 3-5 years.

At first I thought you were joking when you said the games weren't optimized for it, but now I fear you actually think that's the case.

It's not.

That CPU is old, and it isn't going to get any better. The G4560 might only have 2 cores, but it's hyper threaded, so it's seen as a 4 core machine. It also behaves pretty much as such, and would absolutely crush the AMD CPU. Stop trying to spread incorrect information to people who don't know better.

Have you tried the new pentiums? And yes, I have experienced APU systems before. They were quite decent when they came out and the new Zen based APU's are the best options for a low budget.

Please lets help OP instead of arguing about a CPU that obviously needs to be replaced.

And even back then, AMD knew that those CPU Cores didn't perform like real cores. CPU Cores from AMD's previous CPU designs performed like an equivalent Intel CPU with half the number of CPU cores. It's just one of the design flaws with their prior architectures.

AMD knows how bad their old CPUs are and that's why they had to drop the FX line when creating Ryzen to separate themselves from the stigma and negative connotations that were associated with FX CPUs.

Alright children, settle down. The AMD APU is almost exactly equal to the pentium. Either way, I wouldn't upgrade to a new GPU unless you're going to upgrade to a new system or dont care about a potential bottleneck. You wont be bottlenecked in a fair number of games, but you will be bottlenecked in also a fair number. I would guess it's probably 50/50 for modern games. I would suggest running as few applications as possible in the background while gaming to reduce the likelihood.

As for the choice, I would buy whichever you can find cheaper, as those 2 cards swap spots based on which company the game was optimized for.

Edit: 144hz is not happening unless you play indie/2D games or play everything on low-medium
