Recommend a Cooler for the i7-2700k

count_zero99uk

Im rehoming my i7-2700k into a new(2nd hand) Motherboard.  The GA-Z77-D3H from gigabyte with the intention of overclocking.  I have 16gb DDR3 1600 ram, KFA2 GEFORCE GTX 1070 EX 8192MB.

Ive not overclocked before so will be taking it slow, i looked at AIO setups but from what ive read the budget im looking at i can probably get and air cooler that works better.  Im looking to spend no more than about £30-40 or is that not going to be enough?

Ive been trying to find out how much cooling i need, but whereas i can find out how much heat the cpu puts out, and how much more your likely to increase it by i cant seem to find info on how much heat the coolers dissipate, unless im missing something (which is possible).

So yeah, if you could recommend a cooler for the above that would be great, im trying to save money atm so cheaper is better, as long as it does the job.  Dont need rgb, dosnt need to be silent, but obviously i do want to hear my speakers over it :-).

As for when i get the cooler, is there a recomended thermal compound now? going to be reseating my stock cooler on another chip and will need it for that even if the cooler i get has it pre-applied.  Oh and what do you use to clean the paste of the old cpu and cooler?

Many thanks.

Honestly you cant go wrong with a Hyper 212. As for thermal compound, try something like Arctic Silver or IC Diamond. Also, there is an LED version of the Hyper 212 but I believe its only in red.

Also This AIO is worth looking into. It will cool better and quieter at a comparable price. Coolermaster is a reputable brand and the product comes with a warranty on it. I would definitely look into an AIO if your case has the space.

You can go with something like a Cryorig H7. I've got one on my 8600k and it'll sit at 4.8GHz at around 70c under load, but I prefer to have it a little lower at 4.6GHz at around 65c. Fantastic cooler for the price.

An H5 will be alright, might want to avoid the really cheap 240 AIOs, the cooler should come with thermal paste, get MX-4 otherwise

Budget is mid range i dont want another £15 case that cuts my hand, but i also dont need a load of rgb fans internals and whatnot.

Im looking for a simple case that is easy to cable manage, and has good airflow, maybe with room for that aio you recommended.

GPU dimensions  296 x 144 x 43 mm

Id like to be able to easily change the SATA Hdds but other than that as long it fits the atx board ill be happy.  Budget, £50-100 lower means i can spend more on my monitor when all this is built and works. (please please let the 2nd hand mobo work)

On case, as a suggestion I have one of these as a mid range tower and like it, although it might not be the highest airflow. No window if that matters. Can't recall if I ever used water on it.

On air cooling you can brute force it with a Noctua D15, or the slightly smaller versions, but double check case size. Not sure on the budget end, I have used Hyper 212 in several builds but I've not used it for pushing hard overclocking, and I'd want something better if that is the goal.

Main system: i9-7920X, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance LPX RGB 3000 8x8GB, RTX 4070 FE, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

On my old i7 2600k rig I'm pretty sure I used a Noctua NH-D14 cooler as it was basically the best back in 2011.

With that and arctic silver 5 TIM it ran 5 gHz stable in real world use (wasn't completely stable in some heavy benchmarks iirc) for 4 or 5 years, then it started having stability issues just booting so i had to back off the OC and ended up selling it.

The S340 is fine. It also comes in white and might be cheaper from some other sites. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/Vpdqqs/nzxt-case-cas340ww1

There are cases with better airflow and newer designs though.

If you prefer a flat front panel, the Define C is a better case: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/qCDzK8/fractal-design-define-c-with-window-atx-mid-tower-case-fd-ca-def-c-bk-w

Otherwise, the Meshify C TG allows for better airflow: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/nL7v6h/fractal-design-meshify-c-tg-atx-mid-tower-case-fd-ca-mesh-c-bko-tgl

If you end up going with a case like the Define / Meshify C, it would allow more clearance for a taller cooler like the K2: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/LzNypg/deepcool-cpu-cooler-luciferk2

Otherwise,

Ereboss: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/6Rfp99/raijintek-cpu-cooler-0p105250

Mugen 5 Rev. B: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/q9QRsY/scythe-mugen-5-512-cfm-cpu-cooler-scmg-5000

The paste included with coolers are generally pretty good already.

In the end decided on this,

CPU: Intel - Core i7-2700K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master - Hyper 212 LED Turbo (Red) 66.3 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Gigabyte - GA-Z77-D3H ATX LGA1155 Motherboard received but not tested to post or anything yet (visually looks fine)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Seagate - Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: KFA2 - GeForce GTX 1070 8GB EX Video Card
Case: Phanteks - Enthoo Pro M ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: EVGA - SuperNOVA G2 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular  (see below)
1 x Case Fan: Corsair - AF140 140mm Fan  Rear
2 x Case Fan: Corsair - AF140 140mm Fan  Front

anything bolded i allready have.

Though i am toying (read will mostly) change the PSU to Corsair 650W TX650M Gold Hybid Modular Power Supply/PSU

Why the 212 LED Turbo? It's worse than every other cooler mentioned in the thread.

The Enthoo Pro M is a good well-rounded case with decent airflow options.

Is you want to add front case fans, NF-P14S would better: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/k9xfrH/noctua-case-fan-nfp14sredux1200

Either the G2 or TX650M V2 would be excellent. Go with whichever is cheaper.

It might be easier and make more sense to use a PCPartPicker permalink instead of pasting parts.

The 212 Turbo fits the look of the build im doing, at a pricepoint i could afford.  After being told about how the mobo isnt gonna be great for overclocking im starting to think about just getting some new parts and rebuilding this as a server but not overclocking it.

Will the 212 turbo be an ok cooler on this https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/BjgxfH  no overclock or anything.

It's enough for stock settings but it'd be better to go with a 8700 and a cheaper motherboard instead. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/M3m323/msi-b360-gaming-plus-atx-lga1151-motherboard-b360-gaming-plus

The case only comes with one included fan and you should probably add one more.

You have the option to delete any existing partitions and format the drive during the installation.

Modern ssd's are pretty durable and zeroing out the drive isn't going to be a problem. Normal formatting isn't as write heavy.

Cheers for the advice,  now to hope my oem win 7 will activate on my replacement motherboard as the old one is "broken".

How would the http://www.coolermaster.com/cooling/cpu-air-cooler/masterair-g100m/ do as a cooler to the i7-2700k would it be better than the 212?

The quick review i looked at dosnt look good.

Thanks for helping, i really appreciate it.

It substantially worse than the Hyper 212.

There's a cooler performance tier list pinned at the top of the Air Cooling subforum.
