Worth buying new batteries?

kelvinhall05

First off, sorry if this is in the wrong subforum, but I'm not sure where else it would belong. I don't really need my UPS, an APC SMT1000, but I don't know whether to sell it as needing new batteries, or buying new batteries for it and using it for my own use. If the former, how much should I sell it for? If the latter, how much should I be spending on batteries? Thanks!

I'd say get your own batteries and keep it, did you buy the SMT unit since that is a commercial unit that costs a pretty penny brand new. It has excellent pure sinewave output.

As for batteries that depends as long as they're decent quality seal batteries and have the minimum specs of the originals it shouldn't have any issues. Quick look around shows orginals from APC are around $130 and aftermarket ones varying a fair bit.

I got lucky (maybe, not quite sure if it's the batteries that make it drain in around a minute when unplugged, even at less than 10% load) and found it in an e-waste bin.

Is there any difference between first and third party batteries? I found some on eBay for $30 a pop.

Nice find, sounds like the batteries are dead, you can do a test if you have other UPS batteries that have a similar discharge rating. Just put a small load on it to not over do it if the batteries are smaller. As for aftermarket options it's similar with any battery on the market you just need to make sure it's reliable and actually provides the rated specs they have, sometimes it's hard to do so but some provide paperwork and tests of their specific batteries.
