a gtx 1080 or a 1080ti for 1080p ?

i know both are overkill but i like to max out the game like assassins creed , the witcher and other open world games 

but , i wont be upgrading for a while *around 4 years* ,, so will the 1080 be enough or i need a 1080ti ?

A 1080 is more than enough for 1080p.

yes, 1080/ti is overkill for 1080/60Hz gameplay. but if you are going for a higher refresh rate monitor (120/144/165Hz) then it does need more GPU power to drive.

four year upgrade path is ok for now, but titles will add more eyecandy and reduce that time interval.

depends on what developers find to waste more GPU power on like smoothness/polygon aggressiveness, etc.

actually, id buy smarter/cheaper than hoping what you have is 'enough' for a longer upgrade cycle.

1060 6GB would be plenty and upgrade later with money saved now (since GPU pricing is not at a level it should be).

you can buy a 1060 for a 1080 P gaming on like two monitors and it'll run fine 1080's are made for 4k gaming

Maybe not two monitors lol, but a 1060 is fine for a single 1080p monitor. Though even then in some games it won't max the 75hz with settings maxed out.

Neither are overkill, depends on the game and cpu. 

 

For pubg id prefer a 1080ti, with my setup. 

 

For my other games, the cpus I have are far too weak for 1080p. But if I had something better, I’d still use a ti over a 1080.

You'd probably be fine even with a 1070/1070Ti lol if you really want because 1080p 75hz as you said is easily attainable with those two. Unless you really need that 1080/1080Ti spec in your comp that makes you feel good then in that case a 1080 would be best at the lower price but not tossing too much for negligible performance increase [at very high frame rates the CPU starts to bottleneck especially in 1080p gaming depending on what you have since there's a shit ton of frames to compute]. 1080Ti rather overkill for any 1080p resolutions, you're better off going 1440p if you need a 1080Ti.

i'm now going with the 1080 as i found its also an overkill and i might upgrade earlier than 4 years  
anyways the cpu isnt the issue as its a 8700k .. but the question now i found a gtx 1070ti for 500$ and the 1080 is 560-590 .. you think the 1080 is worth it now ?

assuming same model [3rd party maker] eg asus strix for example. pick best price. if you overclock the 1070Ti and put in a bit of effort along with above adequate cooling u can get 1080-like performance while saving 60-90$. from the benchmarks i saw on average on youtube it looks like the 1070Ti is a better proposition. but then you have to ask yourself is paying an extra 60-90$ worth an extra 5-8 fps? that i can't answer but personally i would go 1070Ti. especially given your monitor has an upper limit of 75hz, if you did have a higher frame rate monitor then a 1080 would be the best thing you can buy.

 

according to witcher 3 i saw 1080Ti only outputting approx 130fps on 1080p maxed out which is scary given how powerful the 1080Ti is [and this benchmark i saw was run with an 8700k like you said above]... which is accurate to what I see myself [90-100fps on 1440p maxed] so do not be too down about this, it is one of the most graphically intense game i have played so far but don't mind the loss as I'm fine with floating around 100fps on avg.]

At only 75hz, I'd have to say get a 1080. I run my Fury (not even as fast as a 1070) on a 1080p 144hz panel, and I get 60-70fps MINIMUM in any game I play, so a 1080 would be more like 90-100fps minimum. Hope I helped.

Neither. Both are way overkill for 1080p @ 75Hz.

The highest tier GPU I would purchase for your monitor would be a 1070.

Definite 1080 1080ti is geared towards gaming at 4k 

But for about  4 years its safer to go for 1080ti incase  games start to suddenly be over demanding

Get the most powerful card you can afford, always.

People will tell you that you don't need XYZ card for 1080p gaming, but games become more demanding with time and your sweet-spot card for 1080p gaming will barely be usable at 720p in a couple of years. Unless you can afford to update every gen, just go with the most powerful card you can get.

Personally i'd get a 1060 (6gb)/1070 and then upgrade to the same tier in a newer generation in 2 or 3 years, if/when they struggle on something I want to play. You would still likely have paid less than a 1080ti and you still have the other card to sell or use as a backup.
