Is running 1440p with a GTX 970 feasible?

I'm thinking about getting a new monitor. The one I have right now is a Dell S2440L (24", 1080p 60Hz), along with some ancient crappy Samsung TV as a second. I'd like to replace the old crappy one with my current main one and get a nice 27" one or something as my primary. Basically I have a few questions:

a) Is it smart to buy a 1440p panel for use with a 970?

b) If so, what panels would you guys recommend?

I'm also thinking about a monitor arm to mount them on as well.

What games would you be playing at 1440P? If you're just web browsing, that card will be fine for running two monitors.

My System:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC •  Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White) • ASUS VG27AQ • Logitech G810 Orion Spectrum • Logitech G502 Hero

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

Enable super resolution in the nvidia control panel to render at 1440p and downscale to display on your 1080p monitor and bam you have your answer.

There's something cool here - you just can't see it.

I tend to play quite a few open-world games like The Division, Far Cry 5, stuff like that. I also do simulators but not as often.

In my experience, no.  I have a 3440x1440 which is more pixels than a 27 incher I know, but xplane wasn't worth playing with a 970.  Settings had to be turned WAY down from where I had it on a 1080 monitor to get frames back up to even 24fps.  It only looked good from 30K feet up.

If I got a 1440p panel I'd replace my old second monitor with my 1080p main one. I guess I could just run the game on that monitor then :P

I also have a 970 with the Asus MG279Q and it runs fine. You just cannot run at max settings, but just below high I get around 50 fps for ROTTR and around 40 fps in Assassin's creed origins with high settings.

1.78x 1080p is 1440p.  It won't be 100% accurate of an actual 1440p panel, but it should help some.  And honestly, I would think it'd be lower fps than an actual 1440p panel if anything since it has to be down sampled.

Good to know. I'm fine with turning down stuff like AA since it's a higher resolution anyways.

I'll give this a try. Thanks.
