Yeah I know there are definitely questionable games out there. Though even those that would be far from something like that tend to get banned, cause "sexually focused", like what. 

I mean it's not like someone wants to publish a rape simulator game on Steam though. 

Just saying, there are grusome games out there, no one bats an eye. But some games where you can clearly see it's an adult woman and game is boobie focused may get banned.

I'm not surprised that this thread devolved pretty quickly. It's a pretty big stretch to start seeing correlation between pedophilia and people who get aroused by anime-figures, not to mention all the other hatred I see here. People are just playing to their fantasies and fetishes, so what? Everyone has some fetish, some have more than one, but as long as they don't actively do harm to anyone else, they should be allowed to indulge freely.

I totally agree that they are overhyped and talked about. But they still have their valid fan bases.


That's the big thing about VN's. You had the people who liked the stories (such as myself), then you get the people who look for the flaws (perhaps something that is not common in Western society, or a mistranslation, or even a direct translation that could mean something completely different to what the original meant), and as a result causes jokes and memes. Sure, a lot of VNs get flack for being classed as "Ecchi" (erotic but not abruptly sexual content), and as such, they are the ones people remember as its easy to make fun out of them.


Then you get stuff that just takes the genre by storm, such as "Just Monkia". "Doki-Doki Literature Club" was a twist in the genre as it was a primarily Western developed VN that took a path that very rarely Japanese VN's would dare to tread on. For that reason, the shock horror and the memes made it a huge success - which, like it or not, is not going to disappear anytime soon (In my opinion anyway).

 

It has its fan bases, but the opposite fan base, I would argue, is what is keeping VN's relevant and talked about due to the jokes/memes/insults they throw at people who like the genre.

EDIT: Not to mention, when you get people who oppose the genre and try to make everyone think in the same mindset that they do - it causes a huge out lash as a view on censorship. As for the groups saying it depicts acts against children, most VN's have a warning at the beginning (if any dubious acts take place) that the characters are over the age of 18 and that it's a fictional story. 

It just goes back to the argument "Think of the children". Just because people delve into the world of VNs doesn't mean they as any likely to act on what is seen in the story, compared to someone who plays Mortal Combat going up to someone and ripping their head from their neck.

I wouldn't be surprised if this gets more people to buy them.  Drm free is nice, but your steam friends not being able to see you buy and play these games is priceless.

I dunno, i don't play them.

The only ones i played are hyperdimension neptunia (the re:live series) which is part VN part turn-based rpg stuff and Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash.

But i won't be surprised if both of them got banned as well  D:

 

It's difficult to call Hyperdimension Neptunia a waifu boob game tho, half of the characters are kids and all characters have a realistic-ish boob size.

Peach Beach, i can see why they want to ban it, but it's not a VN, it's an arena shooter.

It's like how youtube doesn't allow porn. You can say "but but but they can add an adult section!" that's really not the point.

 

Steam doesn't want to be a place where you go to beat your dick. That's all that really matters here.

Steins;Gate, Steins;Gate 0, Danganronpa 1, and Danganronpa 2 are the first few that come to mind that are on Steam.

 

Also, almost no VNs that I'm aware of have actually been removed yet, they were just threatened and given a 2 week notice to remove any sexual content (without telling the devs what sexual content there actually was and what exactly was infringing on Valve's ToS) - that threat has since been revoked (as far as I can tell) and Steam has said it is reviewing all games that got the notice to ensure they fit within Steam's guidelines. Basically this whole situation was caused on impulse/reflex (common theory is that this was incited by PayPal's anti-porn policy and many VNs having user-generated tags such as 'Nudity' and 'Sexual Content') and everything is now actually being looked at properly by Valve - which probably means everything will be fine since Valve isn't exactly known for curating its store in the slightest. But the fact that this scare occurred in the first place has caused many VN devs to look to other, more reliable platforms to put their games on, such as GOG.

That isn't the case at all though, most if not all the games & VN's mentioned in the thread are safe for 13+ or whatever and allowed to stream on Twitch (except for Huniepop for example cuz ppl abused the rules with the 18+ patch). IMO if it's safe enough for Twitch it isn't anywhere close to being ''porn''.  Valve would be better off ditching Payal as a payment system and telling the lobbyist prudes to gtfo.

Aren't most of these sold on steam the family friendly version anyway? If that's the case, then it will be business as usual, more or less. Valve cannot and should not dictate what mods can be made and applied to what they sell.

 

I don't mind it at all that valve is finally curating it's content, there's a lot of garbage on steam. It's all good as long as it's what valve wants and not what some SJW organization wants.
